Troubleshooting HEI Distributor
77 350 with HEI Distributor. Had a no spark problem again today. Car running fine now but had to try and wait a bunch of times. It stopped while driving three times but started right back up first two times. I want to test all components of Distributor to not get stranded. There was 12v going into Battery Terminal on distributor

Cuts Out But It’s Not An X-Y Plotting Sheet Metal Cutter
Wire up a small 12 volt bulb (a side marker bulb works best).
Connect one lead to the BAT terminal at the distributor, and the other lead to ground.
Make the wires long enuff to bring it into the cockpit.
The next time the engine cuts out observe if the bulb is on or off.

Re: Troubleshooting HEI Distributor
this is what ive read to test
1st test- primary resistance, tach to bat terminals is near zero -
2nd test - secondary resistance, rotor button to ground -
3rd test - secondary resistance, rotor button to bat terminal -
1st i get 3.5 ohms ( not close to zero?)
2nd i got 11.2k ohms
3rd no reading (is that infinate?)

10-4 on that.
Even tho your new distributor is on it’s way if you want to troubleshoot the old one further probe with an audio amplifier to the connection from the module output to the coil primary.
When the engine cuts out, crank the starter.
If you hear clicking when you do that, but the car won’t start, the ignition coil is bad.
If you don’t hear clicking when you do that, the module or pickup coil is bad which can be further diagnosed to determine which.
