Rear Hatch Wiring

I had to remove my rotten wrap around spoiler last summer and when it was done, the electrical connections that ran up to the third brake light were taken out as well. Without these I have no rear defrosters. Here is what I have left, I can figure out what to do except I don't know what the wire hooks to because all I have left in the hole where they look like they would plug into is these little metal ends.

Re: Rear Hatch Wiring

The spring loaded connector that contacts with the pad on the hatch just powers the HMSL (high-mount stop light). The power to the hatch defroster should attach to a connector welded to the upper and lower locations on the hatch struts.

So it could be a bad relay? I can hear it click behind my suspension badge with I try to use them.

Re: Rear Hatch Wiring

What if I want to put in a third brake light? I noticed the high mount ones have specific defroster wire patterns and because I had a wrap around spoiler I don't.

Wire it off of the brake light switch.

The later cars just have the defroster go around the third brake light. The wiring for the 3rd light comes up the roof and there's a curly Q wire from the roof under the headliner to the light on the bottom of the hatch. Short of changing the entire hatch, it'd be hard to adapt since the mount is a permanent part of the hatch. You'd be further ahead to get a spoiler with the 3rd brake light and use the stock wiring you removed to hook it up.
