How many wires to the starter?
89 Formula 305 TBI
Trying to hash out and correct this wiring harness and just generally clean things up.
I went to pull the starter wires to clean them up and there are four large red 10ga wires connected to the +post along with the battery cable. The purple is on the small ignition post.
The wiring diagram shows only a the battery cable and the ignition wire going to the starter.
So the question is, should all the other red wires be routed to the power distribution block? How many other wires do you guys have running to your starter?
As it was wired, the car started and acted normally so I'm sure all of the red wires need to be hot all the time. I just want it wired where they are supposed to go, not just where they CAN go.

Ok, so how about this simple question...particularly for those who have an unmolested car.
How many wires are running to your starter where the battery cable connects?

Well, I don't know if it's correct but I am fairly positive no one has touched the wiring on my car and I have the same configuration as yours......I suppose consistency is key right? lol

Fusible links and battery cable should all go to same large starter terminal - not sure on the fusible link count. Purple wire only other wire and it connects to smaller starter terminal.

Re: How many wires to the starter?
Thanks for the insight. I was just making sure that it wasn't a hack job by the PO. I find it odd that GM would just stick a bunch of wires on the starter for power, but I've seen stranger things, so it doesn't surprise me. I think I'm going to clean it up and send them to their own power block.

Re: How many wires to the starter?
82-84 Fbodys had dealership added pusher fuel pumps. When installed the power for the relay came straight from the battery.
Best thing to do is start tracing wires.
Also, if you buy any painless kits, the relays almost always get their power from a fusible link or the battery.
