Lights will not go up.
I have the 1986 Transam from the Force3 tv show.
Im in the process of seeing what needs to be done to the car.The first thing is the lights wont flip up.When the headlight switch is turned on you can see the lights themselves come on.
I don't have a manual.I have found 2 sets of wires going to plugs.Could someone pls tell me if these have anything to do with the headlight system and if not what are they for?
If some could post a scan of the headlight circuit and operation info that would be great.
Thanks,
Fred

Re: Lights will not go up.
Hi. I have taken my car apart like crazy and I hope I have your answer. The plugs that you displayed in your pic go into one relay, which assists in controlling your headlight to flip open and close; it is located right behind the battery, towards the fender, there is a location for it. It may not be in your car from what i see in the car. If you can find one, try to stick with an original like AC Delco because I have tried after market parts and they do not work right. Tell me what happens.

I hope this will help you.
I do not have a scanner, so I drew up this crude schematic.
It is for an '89 Firebird.
There are different part numbers for the 87-89 and the 90-92
So I do not know the differences, yet.
My manuals are in a different location from my house.
Sorry about the size, zoom is your friend

My 1986 Manual is in that other location as well

Re: Lights will not go up.
No I haven't got the isolation relay yet but im sure that's the problem.
Your car has a different system that I think is more reliable and that uses a headlight control module. From what ive read sometimes the module needs resoldering where the connector connects to the board because of hairline cracks. You should try this first.

I have the same problem on my 86, except I can get the lights to flip up if I "balance or hold" the headlight switch between parklight and headlight. I am just now starting to investigate this. Could be interesting if someone could explain the function of the relays to help troubleshooting. (I will start searching for other posts on this in case this has been explained before, not so easy to find)

Re: Lights will not go up.
My wife had her isolation relay burn out on her 1986 Firebird. After months of research I put two years of electronics school to work and built a replacement. Watch it in action on .
Working up the plans now that include a test plan and will post them in another thread soon.
