Lets play name that wire!

Just bought this 87 GTA & I'm having some issues with the MAF. When I connect it the car does not fire up, with it disconnected it will fire up but run poorly.

I bought a new MAF & its doing the same thing. So I started looking at the wiring & found that somethings had been disturbed, below are a few pics. I need to know what the wire does & where it should be connected.

Also on another note, I checked to see if the MAF connector is getting power & it is.... There is also a thick black wire spliced into a wire that goes directly to the MAF power sensor.... Below are some pics.

This relay has had a wire cut on it, on another note when I manuelly activate it one of the fans kicks on. The second fan is wired to run when key is hot...

This pic shows a better view of the wire that was cut. Its a green wire with a white line running through it.

Re: Lets play name that wire!

What your looking at up there is the previous owners stroke of genius. He wired the fan into the MAF relay.... He in turned ruined the connection that powered the MAF. Put it back to how it was meant to be & the car now starts with the MAF connected.

Now I gotta figure out why the damn fans aren't turning on. I'm guessing that relay he operated on isn't working as it should..... Anyone know if that relay is the only thing controling the dual fans? Or if there is something else somewhere else?

& are both fans suppose to turn on at 245 or two different temps?

TY

Re: Lets play name that wire!

I hope someone else can give you a clearer answer, but i'm remembering fixing the fans on my '88 tpi car; the driver's side fan had a relay that was grounded by the ecm at around 220*, pass. side had another relay that used a temp sensor between cylinders 6 and 8 that kicked in around 230*. It's a foggy memory now but I think both those relays were on the pass side of the car, towards the front near to the radiator or somewhere, not sure if i'm right here, or if it may be different for your year.
My biggest problem was in the harness's power connections to the fans, where they go thru a large molex plug before reaching over to the fan motors. Some of those plug connections had overheated and the plastic melted into them to the point where the pins weren't contacting. Hope this gets you at least headed in the right direction.

Re: Lets play name that wire!

The fans seem to be working fine. I just wasn't letting the temp get high enough. Driverside fan turns on, it does not get hot enough for the pass fan to turn on.

Still having an intermittent problem with the idle & reliability. It ran fine for a good 12miles with the MAF connected, then I made a stop at the store & it died on me in the parking lot & would not start back up.

Disconnected the MAF sensor and the damn thing cranked right up. Of course it runs like crap without the MAF.

The fan relay which also looks to run power to the MAF is super beatup, I'm thinking that relay could be causing a power issue to the MAF there fore making it idle badly & at times not start at all. I have checked power to it with DMM & it had 12+volts. I also noticed it only starts acting up when hot like 245 & when the fan starts to run, the fan which is operated by that dumbass relay. So maybe that old relay cannot handle the both the fan & the rest of its responsabilitys. I'll check tomorrow.

Re: Lets play name that wire!

Looks like both relays I repaired the connections to where coolant fan relays, one was primary the other was secondary.

I thought they had something to do with the MAF because one of them had a cover that said MAF power relay on it.

Turns out P.O put the wrong cover on it. Looking for the MAF power relay/MAF burn off relay now.
