91 camaro rs vats questions
Hello everyone. I am probably going to buy a 91 RS this weekend. It's a 305TBI car with a 5 speed. The car wont start with the key but you can roll start it. I'm trying to figure out how to replace the lock and key and get the car to start normally. How/who could program the new key to the car? Would it be easier to find a lock, key, and ECM to replace what I have?
What is the best/easiest way to get this car back on the road from here?
Thank you for any help here.

if it roll starts, may just have a bad ignition switch.... not sending 12v to the starter whn you turn he key. ign switch is on the steering column under the dash

Thanks Deadbird. The problem is someone monkeyed with the ignition and put a non vats in it. If I replace the ignition with a correct VATS key, how do I get the car the recognize the new ignition? You can turn the ignition on and roll start it no problem. to kill it though you have to let the clutch out in gear. Hope that makes more since.

Re: 91 camaro rs vats questions
I think I've a grasp on what you meant, you were reasonably clear. VATS doesn't seem to be issue if the car(engine) will run.
The ignition cylinder (where the key goes, red arrow) is not the ign switch (green). The key is a mechanical means to turn the switch off/run/start. If the switch breaks, it may still turn the power on but do little more.
If VATS isn't working, the 'security' light will stay on and the car can't be started despite rolling it and popping the clutch.

Ok, I see what you mean. That makes sense then. The question is what do I do for a key? How do I get the car to start normally? Can I put a VATS key ignition in it and go, or to I have to reprogram it somehow? I haven't bought the car, or it's twin yet. The twin has the same issue with the key and needs the motor put back together anyway.

That is pretty cool. No resistors, bypass modules, repogramming the prom...I'm in the same boat with a bad ignition switch (push button start) and I want to get that crap outta there.
