question on 98 vortec

I found a 350 vortec out of a 98 chevy. the guy says it was a recall, something to do with a cold knock?? he said they would build up carbon in the motor. If anybody has any info on this it would be great.. he wants $700 for the motor, it has 18,000 miles.

jordanz28ss it sounds to me like that knock is more than likely cold piston slap. GM powertrain aint known for holding production tolerances on these engines when it comes to piston clearance! On the plus side the cold knock doesnt hurt the engine one little bit! I just helped a friend swap in a similiar engine into a 88 Monte Carlo SS with about 36k on the engine, it had a little bit of slap in the truck it was removed from, but when we hooked it up to a carb and HEI setup the noise was not there(As strange as that sounds!) The price for the whole engine doesnt sound too bad(considering that the heads are around 425 a pair). There is a few hurdles to clear if youre going to stick it in a camaro. Namely there might not be a fuel pump pushrod hole and the timing cover will probably have to be changed. . I would say throw it in the hole and drive it like you stole it!!! If it is carbon knock dump a can on top engine cleaner down its throat!! Good luck if you decide to do it.
