perf on a budget
I know you guys have alot of questions like these ones.. but I need your help. I have 4k (canadian) and I want to boost my 85 t/a. I want to stick with carb so I will get a hood first.. take about 1k less for that... now what I want is either a 350 or a 383, but I also want my body and rear-end to take the beating... so what do you suggest I do? I also would like very much to beat 5.0's with that budget... I probably will have more as time goes by... but that's what I have for now.. thanks guys

I live in Quebec.. so the used parts market is very accessible.. I have some adds here... tell me if it is worth it or not.. I can get a posi differential, GM with a gear ratio of 3:36.. they say it's for a GM 1955 to 64??? for 250 bucks... then there is a 350 LT1, 4 bolts, crank-rod-pistons 1 to 11 (????) forged for 1500 bucks, it was rebuilt... anything good? I have a edelbrock carb 600cfm as well if I can keep that...

1: that rear end won't fit your car.
2: 11:1 compression is a little high for a street motor (imho), you may have to run high octane gas to keep the detonation down, the price sound decent depending on what parts they used internally. I don't think the 600 will be enough carb with any motor that breathes well. if your carefull with intake selection you can get a carb on there without needing a new hood.

high octane.. like 93? gas I can find in a gas station right? wouldn't want to have to buy ithilic alcool everytime I want to fill up as for the hood... mine is screwed so I need a new one but damn.. did some calculs and taking a ram air would cost about 1300 bucks canadian... so just might stick with a stock hood heh... though I do want something rather violent... so I dunno if I can with a stock hood.. some advices please?

I think the limit for street compressions is around 10:1 with iron heads. My buddy runs a 350 pontiac in his lemans with 10.25:1, and he runs high test and still has to retard the timing quite a bit to prevent detonation. Just something to think about.
