Car: 1983 WS-6 Trans Am
Engine: 1999 L31 5.7 Vortec
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: Auburn Limited-slip w/3:73 gears
What can I expect from this combo??
1999 Vortec 350 block & heads
Stock bottom end,bore,and pistons
Stock valves w/new springs,retainers,and screw-in studs
Edelbrock Vortec Performer intake
Non CC Q-jet
GMHPP roller cam 230/230 dur.@.50, .480/.480 lift (5.7 Liter H.O.)
Non CC HEI
Hedman shorty headers & Y-Pipe, no cat, Dynomax cat-back
T-5 (I know, ticking timebomb! I'll try to take it easy)
3:73 Posi w/Auburn diff.
This is going into my 83 t-top T/A
Thanks for any replies, this site is a regular nightly source of info and I value your opinions

Well, it has the potential to make around 375hp with that combo. But I think the single pattern cam and regular Performer intake will hold it down around 350-360hp. The Vortecs really seem to like dual pattern cams (exhaust isn't that strong on the Vortecs, likes a little help...) Did you get the valve stem guides clearanced to handle more lift? If so by all means step up the lift a bit with at least running 1.6 rockers if not a bigger cam to start with...
With a better cam and a Perf RPM intake you could approach the 400+hp range pretty easily...

I was going to be happy with anything around 300 hp, I'm really excited about getting this running more than ever now:rockon:
Yes,I did check with my machine shop about the proper amount of clearance in order to run the .480 lift, and they assured me that by installing a different spring retainer, that I would have no problem running any lift up to .500 before I would require any machine work.
This has been used often by them with good results.
A couple of concerns I have about this, is(1)what can I expect for idle quality, and(2) where am I most likely the feel the power? ie. low, mid, or high rpm range?
This is not my daily driver, nor do I expect to do a lot of racing, I am looking for something that can at least handle the local crowd with some degree of respect.
Can you give me any idea how this is going to run compared to a 2002 WS-6 RamAir T/A?, a friend of mine has let me drive his, and that car flatout hauls:hail:
Sorry if this has gotten too long

Oh yah, and as far as the intake and cam goes, I realize there are several good cams out there to chose from, but I wanted to stay with a roller, and by looking through the GMPP cat, this one seemed to be in the ballpark of the ones I have read about that are making good power. Besides, a friend of mine that works at a GM dealer, got it for me at his cost
And the intake I chose was mainly picked for hood clearence considerations.
This is my first time at building up an engine, so I'm learning as I go with a little help from my friends
Anything has got to be better that a 150 hp LG-4, Right?
