Motor swap trans question...
I'm not really sure where to put this, so I put it on the Trans board too...
I found a really nice L98 out of a '92 Z......my LO3 is old, tired, and smoky, so I've been looking for something for a while. I'm planning on switching my TBI out for a carb in hopes for better power (and my TBI has seen better days).
I guess my real question is this -- I'm not sure what to think about my transmission (700-R4)....I read in a lingenfelter book that it's electronically controlled (and is actually called the 4L60E, which was supposedly what they called electronically-controlled R4's), but I talked to a guy at this corvette shop that said they started electronically controlling them in 93 or something. So I'm wondering, if I put this L98 in place of my LO3, and get rid of the computer and everything (and put a carb in), will everything be all right (speedometer, kickdown, etc.). I know lockup won't work, but I can just make a switch for that. But will I run into any other problems? I need to know soon because the guy at the junkyard said to let him know today or tomorrow.
Thanks in advance!

Well technically, the 4L60E is an electronic version of the 700R4 but it didn't come out until 94 so your L03's 700 will be TV cable controlled just like the one from the 92 L98 so it should be a pretty straight forward swap.

so if i scrap the computer, my speedo and stuff will still work?

What year is your car? If it's a later model I would make sure the VSS does not interface with the ECM. If you got a hold of a good L98 you will be better off converting your TBI to TPI. Otherwise, you will be downgrading your engines performance.

i have a 91 rs and when i swapped it to a carb everything worked with the speed sensor without the computer. as long as you hook the tv cable up you won't have to worrry about anything. make sure that you keep the stud off of your throttle body for the cable or you'll have to buy a new one like i did. woops. don't leave it unhooked or it will mess up your tranny. plus you won't get firm shift when you are pedal to the metal.

performer RPM air gaps are an awesome manifold. hheard nothing but good things about them and they are used all the time in car craft and hot rod for their engines. as for a carb, it would have to be chosen according to your intended use.

well i'm going to carb for the simplicity and cheapness of mods....the engine's actually coming with the TPI setup (but no ECM or anything....just the manifold and stuff) on it.......but i don't want to have to change all the wiring/ECM/etc...i just want to get rid of the computer and all that stuff.
