LT1 into an 86 Iroc

Ok first off i am considering buying an 86 Iroc-z with 100k miles, a 305 tpi, 700r4.... the tranny is bad and needs to be replaced. ok now i have the oppurtunity to buy a 97 LT1 engine for $200 complete from fuel injectors to pan. my main question is are there any wiring harness that make this an easy swap or is it even possible...and if so will a 700r4 bolt up or no? an help on were to get a harness or how to info would be greatly appreciated....im 16 and pretty new at this stuff...i have my uncle who is a mechanic helping me out but could use some outside info. thanks!

Welcome to the board.

First off, let me make sure that wasn't a typo. You can get a complete '97 LT1 for $200?! If thats right, even if you don't get the car, buy that sucker now because if you dont use it you could easily resell it for anything from $1000-$1500.

Next, I'll go ahead and answer your questions real quick, but before anyone else comes on here and jumps your case, this question comes up about once a week. Up at the top there is a search button that you can use to find out nearly anything and everything you want to know about the LT1 swap.

Now, yes, an LT1 swap is not really that hard. You can get a Painless or Speartech or other companies make complete wiring harnesses for the LT1. Makes for a very straightforward swap. The 700r4 will bolt up to the LT1, but you will have to get the throttlebody off of a '93 LT1 to hook up the cables. Decide from the beginning if you plan on keeping a/c. If you do, there are two options, notch the frame to clear the F-body compressor, or get the entire vette accessory package and get custom a/c lines made. Really the hardest part about this swap is having to get custom fuel, power steering, and a/c lines made. F-body and Vette radiator hoses work, and even a stock 3rd gen radiator can be used.

Good luck if you decide to do the swap. If you have any questions, check on here first, if you cant find it by searching, ask anyone of us that have done the swap and we'll be glad to help.

*edit: Oh yeah, just wanted to add that I'm 19 and did this swap with my dad when I was 16. Having the tools and a place to do the work is an incredible help.

Texas summed it up very well. For $200...you'd be absolutely insane for not getting it. It makes for a fun project but is a little time consuming if you go into it without reading as much as possible on here. You can get custom made ready to plug in fuel lines from www.lt1intake.com Any A/C shop should be able to fab up A/C lines. By the way, since you are saving so much on the motor, why not get a 6 speed

Hey TexasLT1.. i really really want to do an LT1 swap.. but my biggest fear is wiring.. i have no problem with other things.. just wiring.

how does the LT1 wire up to the guage cluster?? i mean the engine is pretty straight forward but.. what about the guage cluster? am i going to be cuting and splicing?

i was pulling a code from my car today and i looked under the dash.. and maaaaan.. there are A LOT of wires.. how is this solved? what exactly needs to be done to get these things to work??

The guage wiring is probably the easiest for the entire swap. There are really only....trying to think.....3 guage wires you need out of the harness, oil, water temp, and tach. The fuel and voltage guages are part of the chassis wiring harness and dont even go into the engine compartment. Speedo is the same way. All you have do to is splice these wires into the 4th gen one where ever you like and is convenient and you're good to go. I think...

yup, for the guages, thats it. There is more for the rest of the wiring, but for the guages I believe that is all you need.

Well, you will need to get a speedo conversion box since you have a cable speedo. The LT1 PCM needs to get a speed signal and the box does that, but it is $350.
Another option is changing the speedo to an electric Autometer one and hook up one wire and get a VSS sender for the tranny.
If you are going with another tranny, get a 4L60E from a 94-97 f-body, makes the swap even easier since the VSS is already in it.

Speartech makes a great harness. That is the one we used on my friends LT1 swap.
