LT1 swap OBDII/OBDI Questions

I am swapping a 1996 LT1/T-56 into my 1991 RS next month so after many hours of research I am asking questions which were not answered in my searches.

A member of this board (he will remain nameless unless he wants to be known, lol) recomended I convert to OBDI. I was looking at http://www.madz28.com/9697.php which has been recomended my many people as a reliable source for custom programming.

I just want to recieve other peoples opinions on which route I should go. Convert to OBDI, or keep the OBDII and get the programming I need for VATS, rear 02s and the other things I need to swap.

EDIT: I hit enter too soon. I have noticed that everyone that has completed this swap, (at least everyone I have seen) has either stock 3rd gen manifolds, Hedman headers or SLP headers. I have Edlebrocks right now (not the best but I got a great deal) other than having to have a O2 bung welded into the passenger manifold will I have any trouble?

I'm running the obdI in my 87 camaro w/ 95 lt1. I bought the harness and programmed ecm from Howell. My brother was able to find a guy who sells obdI cable & software to that we can re- program via labtop. not sure if the guy sells obdII connection cables or not but i can find out.

Thing big thing I was looking at is that he can program the OBDII for $125, it seems like he can do everything I want, get rid of the skip shift, the rear 02s sensors and VATS, and custom tuning for performance.

This is $100 less than having the coversion done...

I would say that if you have a good deal on a OBD II ecm, go for it.

For what reason do you want to switch to OBD I ???

People were doing the OBD 2 to OBD 1 conversion all the time because programming the OBD 2 pcm's was too hard/expensive.

Now programming seems to be much more available and cheap as well. I would stick with the OBD 2 if you can get a good deal on programming.

We put Edelbrock headers on my friends LT1 swap into his 82 T/A.
We had them installed when we put the motor in. Actually, the entire motor was together when we dropped it in.
His is a 96 SS Lt1 converted to OBD1 so that there are less sensors to mess with and cheaper to program yourself.
TunerCat will program an OBD1 car, but not an OBD2.
LT1 edit is much cheaper for an OBD1 car as well.

I am running Hedmans on my setup though.

If you keep the OBD2 setup, get some rear O2 Simms.

Here is a shot from my friends install,

Oh, and I forgot to mention that this engine and tranny combo came from www.speartech.com. They make a wonderful engine harness that is completely plug and play. I highly recommend them for a custom harness, much better than the Painless wiring harness.

Neo....Ion is the guy from Madz28.com He programmed my OBD 1 PCM about a month and a half ago and as far as I know, he doesn't do OBD 2 yet. He is an excellent guy to work with. My car is actually on his customers cars section Autotap is the program that you'd need to program OBD 2 cars and from what I've read a couple of months ago, it costs around $1000 for all the programming stuff aside from a laptop. IMO, it will be easier in the long run for you to program OBD 1 PCMs and not to mention much cheaper. I have Hooker headers and have absolutely no problems with fitment. I also had to weld a bung on the passenger side header. After Ion's programming, my speedo is dead on and the motor runs perfectly. He needs to know your tire size, what temps you want for the fans, if you are using a 4l60e or whatever and a few other misc. things. He said mine was the first lt1 3rd gen PCM he did. Good luck. Let us know what you decide to do.

I went to his site today, and he updated it since the previous time I saw, and now has OBDII on there. This afternoon I was thinking of saving $100 and just programming the OBDII instead of switching, but now I am clueless, lol.

Zepher, He can program out the two rear 02s instead of using simulators.

I'd go with whatever you have budgeted for.
Since I have Tunercat already (from my TPI days) and an OBD1 setup already, I am good to go.
If you plan on tuning the car yourself, go ODB1 and get Tunercat, LT1 Edit is $100 more and does the same thing BUT is locked to your PCM unlike Tunercat which isn't.

I talked to Ion last night and I will be staying with OBDII, because I will never do my own programming, and I doubt I will be doing any modifications for awhile, they will be done when the engine/tranny goes into the car.
