Crate Engine Drop

Okay finally got the money to get rid of the 305 and drop in the crate. The question is what are some of the best engines to drop in our cars. I was looking at the 350 h.o. 330hp/380lbs of torque. Now also what is a good 6-speed to hook up to it? Also one last question is this going to be a pain in the *** to go from fuel injected to carb or could i keep in fuel injected?
this is the engine if you want to check it out http://www.paceperformance.com/produ...39&1=241&3=886

Use of the car when done (street, daily-driver, street-strip, strip-only, etc.)?

If street-anything, emissions testing and/or inspection required?

Year, induction type your currently have?

I meant emissions inspection, specifically. No biggie.

The ZZ4 is a better engine. But, at about 50% higher price for 25 more ponies, you've got to decide about the relative values.

The 350 HO will require a special intake manifold, the ZZ4 takes "normal" SBC stuff.

You will need to modify the fuel delivery system somehow or another. The TBI in-tank fuel pump puts out about 9 psi, carb should only have 4-6 psi. A 3-port regulator with return will allow you to drop it down where it should be. Or, remove the in-tank pump and use a mechanical pump on the engine.

You'll need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor. And carb, of course. And damper.

Actually Texas does have emissions testing. I know I live there. I don't know about in the county that your living in. But in Dallas they sure do.

Also Texas law states that you have to keep all the emissions equipment that came with the car in the car. EGR, Smog pump and all that crap. Check it out on the Texas DOT site.

IF you don't have to sweat emissions, just point your browser over to http://www13.brinkster.com/scbaeb/camaro/project.html and check out the swap I'm doing this weekend. I'm replacing my L03 305/T5 5-speed with a 350 HO/T56 6-speed. I am keeping my TBI, but I'm upgrading to a 454 TBI w/2" bores. My web page has all of the parts that I've bought or plan to buy. Let me know if you'd like any more info...I've already spent countless hours researching old posts for this swap, so I can probably save you some time.

i got this off of the Texas Department of Transportation Home Page
http://www.dot.state.tx.us/
i hope this helps you

20.14 Exhaust Emission System. The owner or operator of any new motor vehicle or new motor vehicle engine beginning with the model year 1968 equipped with an exhaust emission system shall maintain the exhaust emission system in good operable condition and shall use it at all times that the motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine is operated. The owner or oper-

ator of the motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine shall not remove or intentionally make inoperable within the state of Texas the exhaust emission system or any part thereof, except where the purpose of removal of the exhaust emission system or part thereof is to install another exhaust emission system or part thereof, which is intended to be equally effective in reducing atmospheric emissions from the vehicle or engine.

The exhaust emission system was installed by manufacturers of motor vehicles beginning with model year 1968. The inspection of the exhaust emission system will apply only to those vehicles that are equipped with such a system. The following exhaust emission systems will be inspected if installed as original equipment by the manufacturer: thermostatic air cleaner, exhaust gas recirculation system, positive crankcase ventilation system, air injection system, evaporative emission system, and/or catalytic converter.

If installed as original equipment by the manufacturer, the catalytic converter will be considered a part of the exhaust emission system on all 1984 and later model vehicles. It will be inspected as a part of the exhaust system on prior to 1984 model vehicles.

NOTE: The inspection of the exhaust emission system shall not apply to motor vehicles altered and modified to use only a fuel other than gasoline.

NOTE: Vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas as fuel or a combination of liquefied petroleum gas and any other fuel must bear a liquefied gas tax decal on the windshield lower right-hand corner showing this vehicle uses liquefied petroleum gas, before a safety inspection certificate can be issued.

NOTE: A motor vehicle that uses liquefied petroleum gas that is operated by a public school district or county in this state is not required to have a liquefied gas tax decal or special use liquefied gas tax decal.

1. Inspection Procedure. Examine visually.

2. Inspect for and reject if:

a. The exhaust emission system has been removed.

b. The exhaust emission system has been disconnected.

c. The plumbing or hoses are loose, broken, leaking, or improperly routed.

d. Air pump (air injection-type) belt is loose, removed, excessively cracked, frayed or has pieces missing.

e. The exhaust emission system has been altered in any manner to make it ineffective.

f. The catalytic converter has been removed, leaking, or disconnected on a 1984 or later model vehicle.

Get GMs "HT 383"

Its got a longer stroke than the usual 383 kits (3.80" vs 3.75") and its dirt cheap. Most people don't use it because its advertised as a truck motor, but all it needs is a good cam to wake it up. It already has everything else for hi-performance use.

It makes something like 325hp and 415ft-lbs stock, but thats with the tiny cam thats in it. I've seen just a cam change with nothing else kick that up to 380hp and 445 ft-lbs.
