True, it's cheaper to make a carbed engine make that HP. Mine cost 1200 more than my buddies exact mirror copy SBC.
Me, I'd go with a 383 with a set of Brodix heads and an 850 cfm carb.... put you just around your 5K mark.

If were talkin about just building an engine for $5000.00 that will produce 500 hp it is entirely possible to build. If your patient and bargin hunt, with a little research and elbow grease you can build a 383 from carb to oil pan if you do the labor yourself for $3500.00 to $3800.00
