Did you happen to read the fine print at the bottom??

**Camshafts that come with shortblocks are not High Performance Camshafts**

Our shortblocks are not Stroker Motors! Camshafts that come with shortblocks are not High Performance Camshafts,
385HP rating was 357 shortblock motor with Aluminum, 58cc chamber heads, high-performance hydraulic cam .435" / .460" lift & 208 / 221 degrees duration @ 0.050 lift, & Aluminum high-rise intake, Holley four-barrel carb. 750CFM.
Your engine combination will vary from ours so as will your horsepower ratings. Understand your "HP" may be more or less depending on your choice of parts you add to your shortblock .

You will probably end up with about another 1500-2500 in the heads, another camshaft, intake and carb.

I did read the fine print, I am trying to learn more about cars, I may no know much, but I have not really found even a short block that cheap. The cheapest I found a short block 383 for is like $1200. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...Name=WDVW&rd=1

If anyone has suggestions on where to look, let me know...I can only justify up to 1500 bucks for just a shortblock, that's all I want, I have heads and that good stuff.

It's good you came here then.

The 383 "buy it now" price is $1495. That probably means the reserve is close to that. Plus the $150 core charge.

The 350 doesn't look like a bad deal, depending upon the shipping charges.

But, like Klortho said, you've got a lot to do before going pretty fast. Your current heads aren't up to the task. Roller cams start at around $250, although you can get factory take-outs like ZZ4 or LT1 for around $150. Your current exhaust needs to be replaced from heads to rear bumper.

We're here to exchange tech information, so feel free to ask questions. Just be prepared to have your feet planted on the ground.

I already have exhaust on my camaro. Things like that are not the problem. I can do most of the easy stuff. I can't however build a motor from scratch. The heads I have are just stock 350 heads, but someone told me they would work, I could just get work done to them. (or would it be better to buy new ones?)

I am not trying to go extremely fast, I just want the big motor and the sound of the big motor...I want to be a decent amount faster than my stock 305. I would like some speed, but I am not into racing. I want looks and sound mostly.

I already have exhaust. I just bought the SFCs, drag shocks and struts, strut tower brace. Another question...Do I have to buy a whole new rear end, or would it be good enough just to swap the gears out?(3.73s?)

Also, I just want to let you know that I REALLY appreciate the help...I'm a kid trying to learn without a huge budget......I am 18 and I support my parents, so basically its whatever cash I come up with. I have some in the bank, so I can go ahead and get the bottom end and build piece by piece if I have to.

If you currently are running a 5-speed, putting 400hp to the 10 bolt rear it won't last very long, unless you drive it easy. The heads is a big factor, do you have the casting numbers on the heads and know what they come off of? The smogger heads from the 70's will just suck bad and you would be better off buying new ones. Now one big thing is, you can build a car to sound awesome, and you can be worse off than you were with the 305 in the car.

Be careful on which cam/lifter setup you are going to use, and which intake and carb. Look at the RPM ranges for these pieces, just don't buy a cam that will thump hard, but have a useful range of 3000-7500 rpm which is impractical for street use.

To be honest, I would go with an LT1 in the car and put in a CC306 cam, swap the valve springs....it would sound mean, and drive good as well.

There are 101 varieties of "350" heads. Get the casting #'s so we can guide you whether or not to use them.

Something tells me an 18 year old supporting his parents is going to have a problem financing an LT1 swap.

...thats for sure...I work 76 hours a week already.

Anywho...I just read a post about you (5.7kid). Someone said that you knew how to get power out of a 305. Just wondering, is it possible to get 300hp or more out of one? I didn't think there were many aftermarket parts for them. I want a challenge and something that not a load of people have...
