LT1/T56 install: Making the speedo work.
Im wanting to find the quickest/easiest/cheapest way to convert either my speedo to electronic or my tranny to mechanical. What are most people doing for this swap? How much is it costing you and how is it working out for you?

Easiest way, swap the cluster and harness from a '90 model (or '89, can't remember which year Camaro's started the electric speedo) and the underdash wiring.
I did it in my '86 Firebird and it worked out perfect, or you could just swap the cluster and wire the speedo up itself where it screws into the back of the cluster where the printed circuit board is.

I could be wrong but there has to be something out there that you plug in to the guage cluster that reacts to the sending unit on the tranny. But like I said I could be wrong.
Klortho: The 90-92 speedo fits in with no modifications? How does it look? Out of place? How much did it cost you.

I did a complete cluster swap when I put the LT1 in mine so I would have the gauges. Also went from mechanical speedo to electric and swapped the entire dash harness.

from the website I posted....

thats about the only way of that I know to keep a mechanical speedo. But keep in mind, the PCM still needs a speed input.

That seems to be the easiest and cheapest way to do it. I think that's what Im going to end up doing. BTW what are the stock gears in my car? 87 IROC-Z LB9 A4 with a 10 bolt.
