LS1 swap got a few questions. (pictures please)

Hello all well as the title says I'm getting ready to put an LS1 into my 88 RS camaro. My questions are pretty simple but I couldnt find the answers when i looked it up.

1. How did you guys run your intake, what type of hood would you recomend running, should I use the stock hood, cowl, or ram air. I guess more to the point can i run with a stock hood.
(Would love to see some pictures here)

2. What all do i need to change out, I have the engine, computer and a tranny what else do I really need to do, im thinking drive shaft, and engine mounts.

3. What exhaust system do you run, does one that would fit a 350 fit an LS1?

Just figured this would be a quicker way to find what i was seeking then search forums all day and night

as far as engine mounts go, Speedway Motors sells an adaptor plate set that bolts to the LS block and allows use of normal SBC mounts...

they say it will allow you to bolt the LSx right where a SBC once was......

Don't buy those!!!!!! they won't even come close to working, they will not put the eng. in the right spot to begin with. and they won't fit in a 3rd gen no matter how much you hope.. (the eng will sit about 1/2" -1 " too far forward and the oil pan will sit on the k-member) get the spohn ones or make your own. the spohn ones are a deal when you think of the time it takes and cost of stock metal to fab some up.

now the trans mount.. that's a little steep if you ask me but it does take the time out of constantly checking your pinion angle while making your own transmount like I did

I ran my air intake to the passenger side front. If you do this you'll have to move the battery to the driver's side front (thus removing the vapor canistor and maybe the cruise control vacuum canistor). I routed it this way because I was getting interference fromt the upper rad hose if I ran the intake to the driver's side. Obviously you'll have to extend your battery cables if you do this. But that's up to you. I've seen pictures of 3rd gen ls1 swaps with the intake running to the driver's side. Stock hood - Yep you'll be able to run with a stock hood that you have..it keeps it sleeper!! As far as the engine motor mounts goes, I bought a pair of adapter plates off of ebay (I can't remember who makes them but I can find the bill if you want to know) and used them with my stock motor mounts. The engine fit pretty well, no clearance issues with the front of the engine or the back near the firewall. The only clearance issue was the crossmember - the oil pan fit tight against it with no room to rock. To fix this you can either buy a aftermarket crossmember (I know of several shops that have these for sale for 3rd gens) or you can cut/grind/weld back the crossmember to about where the brake line runs on it (about an inch - be careful). As far as the tranny goes, I myself have a m6 in my 91 camaro and it is about 2 inches shorter then my old 700r4. There are no clearance issues with the tranny but you will have to replace the old transmission mount bracket. (Again - there are shops that sell these brackets or you can build it yourself). If you want to build it yourself, be prepared to spend some time and energy getting your fabricated bracket to fit right, right height, make sure its straight..etc.

You can use the driveshaft from your car and it'll work. You will have a solid 2 inches of yoke in your transmission but because the ls1 tranny is shorter than your older transmission, not as much driveline will be in your transmission as it would in your old tranny. Both 3rd and 4th gen tranny's are 41.25 inches long so there is no difference there. You might want to get a longer driveshaft and have it cut/welded/balanced so that you get more in the end of the tranny just becuase you will be putting a lot of hp/tourque throught that driveline. Ecm - you will have to decide if you want an engine bay mounted ecm or put the ecm where the old one was (behind the pass. side dash). If you do the latter, you will have to modify the air duct back there to make it fit. This is becuase the new ecm is larger then the old one. You might also want to fabricate a bracket to hold it in place. The new wiring harness will also come with some fabrication issues. You will have to collaborate the ecm speedo output with your guage cluster, that tach, water temp sender and oil pressure sender will all be different in the new ecm. Research (or you can ask me) on how to make those work properly. Also you will have to decide if you want to keep the ac(if you have one) in your car because you will need a special bracket for you ac compressor on your ls1. As far as the exhaust goes, I myself have eddlebrock shorty's on my engine and they fit great! I had to go to the local exhaust shop and have a 'custom' job to route the y underneath. The y joined up behind the tranny on my car and then out (3.5 inch, cats, front o2's, egr all delete) following the stock camaro route. You CAN do true duals if you want, but I've been told that they are hard to fit, expensive, don't look that good and you can't go that big on the pipe. But I've seen them done so it is do-able. My brother and I did a lot of work ourselves on my ls1 swap and I documented everything with pics so if you want more help or have any questions or want some pics, let me know!
Hope this helps a little
and GOOD LUCK!
