BBC into third gen headers

Anyone out there used ed Quay produsts ???
edquay.com
His products look top notch and meant to be for 3rd gen ONLY
I was looking at buying a set of his headers for BBC part# 500-1110
seem to be good value AND 21/8" to 31/2" collector not like alternative hooker super comps that give a lousy 17/8" to 3" collector
If any one has used there parts especially these headers I'd love to hear there comments
Thanx

Re: BBC into third gen headers

I have his headers, picked them up last winter in a semi finished state (everything was tacked) to allow fitting the tubes perfectly. I have pictures on my link in my sig. I will say a few things you should need to know

1. the # 2 header tube crosses right in front of the dipstick tube that comes out of the pan, major PIA

2. solid mounts are the only ones besides a motor plate you can use.

3. # 6 tube will hit any starter you could use, takes more tweaking.

4. fitting piping to these would be a task, the crowd the tunnel even with a th350

on the other side of the coin, they are works of art although they need some work to make fit they are still a good option for the guy who has a welder and fab type tools, they also offer a dropped back motor location set, quite a bit of mods to get those in though compared to the stock location ones.
Best part of these is that I can crank the car up on stands and just drop`em, the way it should be.
Most huys leave all the tubes seperate and slip them in as a whole, I welded my set all together and have not had any problems with them at all.

Re: BBC into third gen headers

Wow thanx man
Think we've spoken before
They told me to get a "mini starter" which I have but even that wont slip straight in eh?
What did you do to fix this problem and dipstick problem ?
Glad to hear they drop straight out having to pull the motor everytime you wanna take headers off is a mjor PIA.
I have poly mounts are you saying these wont fit I DONT want to go motor plate
Thanks again for you pointers

Re: BBC into third gen headers

The Hooker Supercomp swap header is a street header. It's too small for any performance BBC.

I have Ed Quay headers on my car. 2-1/4" primaries with 4" collectors. They're huge. There's a couple of different versions available and I have the wrong one. My #6 tube wraps over the top of the frame rail. This restricted how far I could lower the engine. Another version has the loop under the car. My heads also have raised exhaust ports. I had to dent a few of the header tubes to get them in past the tubular k-member and a-arms. I also had to dent a tube to fit it under the mini starter. I can't pull the starter off without taking off the headers. The header flange is cut so each tube is separate. It's the easiest way to get them on and off. A set of raised port headers will have longer tubes to compensate for the raised ports. I don't use motor mounts on the side of the engine although they wouldn't be in the way. I use a front motor plate. My engine is also pushed back as far as it can go. The front frame rails of a third gen taper inwards behind the engine. The headers are jammed up right to the frame rails keeping me from moving it back any more. Because of the size of the headers, my steering shaft wouldn't fit. I had to relocate it slightly on the firewall to clear the header tubes.

Big tube headers are not cheap. The Hooker Supercomps are cheap for a swap header. For big tube headers, $1000+ isn't uncommon.

The best fitting headers are custom made. No off the shelf header will be a perfect fit. Any header you buy, get them coated. It's worth the extra money.

Re: BBC into third gen headers

Thanks Stephen
I guess even ed Quay "purpose" made are a pain. Cant believe you had to move the sterring column (ed Quay havn't even mentioned yhis could be a problem) Tut Tut !!
I have Standard exhaust port locations but seems there may still be an issue with ANY starter you use ! and poss dipstick tube ??
Remove headers to get at starter !! Jeesus what a royal PIA.
Can't decide to go with 21/8" and 31/2" collectors or 21/4" and 4" collectors
I'm sure the smaller will be fine but I MIGHT bring myself to stick in a 540++ ci at some time ( but then I guess It'll have raised ports and I'll need new headers anyhow!!
Thanks for your help and info I'll be sticking you on my "Help with this bl##dy BBC into 3rd Gen nightmare" along with greezemonkey
