Is this stock or a swap.

Alright i foudn a firebird that im looking to purchase. But im confused.... Ive looked and in 87' i havent been able to find a car that has a "307" in it... So im confused. Either this guy doenst knwo what it is and its actually a 305... Or it got swapped into it?.... How can i tell if its a 307 or a 305? and what cars were equipped with the 307?

Re: Is this stock or a swap.

depends on which 307 you are talking about

chevy 307 was made from 68 to 73

and then oldsmobile had the 307 for a long long time from i dont know when, to at least the late 80s

both engines are nothing much more than smogger peanut engines, basically as bad as a 305
although id rather have the chevy 307 than any of the other two if i had to choose
ive had a couple 307 chevies, first one was original in a pretty nice all original '68 c-10 pickup, the first one i ever had anyways, ran great,

neither engine came in a third gen f body anyways

if its a chevy engine then its probably the 305

get the numbers off it

you wont know til you run numbers, youre not going ot be able to tell just by looking at it other than if its a chevy or an olds
but you can guesstimate by the harmonic dampner, if its the really wide one then its a 267 or 305 or later years 350 possibly, if its a real skinny one then its 265 283 302 307 or 327 or early first years 350 or something else early 70s or earlier

350 chevy engines used three different widths of dampners over the years

if the engine looks non-original/hacked in/missing smog/computer stuff and is painted anything but black then its hard to say what it is

good luck

Could also be a .010 over 305.

Re: Is this stock or a swap.

Well i talked ot the guy and he said itw as not original... However it was never completely installed... so im wondering how difficult it would be to get the 307 running inplace of the original 305. Or is this somehtign i would need to pull the engine and get a 305 in its place?

There's no reason you can't get a 307 running in place of a 305. There will be some "issues", but nothing that can't be overcome.

Re: Is this stock or a swap.

is there exhaust ?

radiator ?

battery cables ran to the other side of the car?
(since oldsmobile starters are on the opposite side than chevies)

if its missing these and other parts then you may have more of a project than you would like

and if you went to put a chevy engine back in it then you would have to swap the tranny if its not the 10 bolt universal one

because chevy has a different pattern than the rest of GM

v-8 and some v-6 anyways

\
or is it a chevy 307 in it ?

good luck

exhaust, radiator, and cabels...Not sure if its an olds or chevy... I found out it needs a new starter or selinoid... Then it should start...

More than likely it's a Chevy. Whether or not it's a 307, well, still impossible to tell from what you've given us.

Need block casting numbers. Should be driver's side at the backend of the block, that flat area behind the head.
