advice please

okay, i've got the choice between having my lg4 that had a rod knocking, coolant in the oil and in the combustion chambers, being locally pulled and rebuilt, and dropped back in with all hoses, belt, spark plugs, and etc replaced as well for $1500 (does that price sound about right for a good job...?)

and buying the "gm goodwrech 350 crate motor (1970-85) part number 809-10067353 at jegs.

i'd have to pull the old engine and drop this one in myself, as well as swap the intake up form my lg4 over,(and i can do this no problems, i've done it before...and that one i had to tear into the bottom end) i know i've heard they don't make the advertised power...but wouldn't it still make slightly more than my lg4 anyway? as well as be less likely for something else to break? plus later on i could swap cam, heads, intake, and carb and have something with decent power couldn't i?

one more question, as i've never really done anything with a crate engine b4, they come ready to run right? i'd just need to drop it in, connect everything, fill it with fluids, (and swap the intake up over since i wouldn't buy the "package") but then its ready to go right? well besides breaking it in anyway...

Re: advice please

well i've looked more and i think i would go with the #12568758 from summit, about $200 more, looks like less power, but its 87' up so its a roller block, change cam and heads later and it should be about the same as the other one (with same cam/head change) but it would be roller

thoughts?

You beat me to it. Use the later type engine.

Your LG4 is broken. As in can't be rebuilt.

I agree with that approach.

Re: advice please

Without looking it up, if that's the truck engine, then be aware of the swirl-port heads that don't flow, and 87-95 trucks used non-roller setups, but the provisions are there for running the roller. The '87-'92 B2L heads on the F-body 5.7 are NOT the same as same-year 5.7 truck heads. The F-body got iron marine heads on their 350s. You can get the '96-up Vortec 350 longblock for around $2200 if you shop around, and you're then only a cam change away from the 330 HP 350 that sells for hundreds more. I'd never spend $1500 on any 305, I'd say the goodwrench 350 was the only choice for that budget. Crate engines, by law, are supposed to be shipped without oil in them. If you can do it best the first time, get the $2200 350 and spend another $200 on a cam. The HOT cam is fine for TPI or serious carbureted, the ZZ4 is emissions-legal, but will require valve guide work and springs to clear that 0.510" exhaust lift, but so would the HOT cam if you wanted 1.6:1 rockers, for a solid 401 HP@5600rpm and 428 tq@4200 rpm with an RPM AirGap and headers. Anyway, the RamJet cam would also pass emissions, would love 1.6:1 rockers, and work better than the ZZ4 cam up to 5200 rpm, with way better gas mileage and off-idle torque. But a tamer idle. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: advice please

you're saying it may not be roller, bu the block would support it...correct? but that would mean cam and lifter change and its roller ..right? i'm not worried about the heads, i'm thinking if i had a set of the lg4 heads of a friends part car were cleaned up and had some work doen to them they would make "decent" heads (at least for a very small budget) am i right?

Your 305 heads would probably be fine.

Summit's product line description is weird, but looks like your basic LO5 replacement engine.

Re: advice please

That will give you near 10:1 compression. those 416 heads will flow better if you go to 1.94" intake valves, with 3 angle valve job plus a 75 degree bowl hog.
