TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

I bought a 1992 Camaro with the V8 5.0L in it. It is pure stock. I dont know alot about cars but my dad (Im 19) is great with them. He thinks the changing from a TBI to a TPI will HP+ and MPG+. I was wondering if it was worth the power. Also what problems I will run into. We are going to go to a junk yard and strip the TPI off a car.

Re: TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

1 more thing I know the TPI is from what I gathered the better system. BUT the Camaro's with the TPI's had differnt engines. I have like I said the RS So I have the L03 V8 instead of the z28's with the LB9 V8. Is is more hassel than the result??? Is it even possible???

Re: TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

its more than just the tpi... if u truly want a tpi motor you gotta get the tpi and all that fuel junk, the heads, and the cam. i was going to do it for a long time but decided for the 30 horse or whatever its really not worth it... not to mention the throttle linkage and ull have do i dont even know what with the computer.

my opinion... not worth it.

Re: TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

i have done the swap a few times, well worth it in my book!
88-92 is the best and easiest to swap to tpi
TPI complete intake 2-300.00
TPI fuel line from rail to fender
TPI throttle cable
TPI TV cable
90-92 TPI harness
TPI fuel pump 255lph(may as well you will be there anyway)
TPI ecm get a perf.chip
getting rid of the TBI is possibly the best performance mod $4$

Re: TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

i may be wrong about the cam... coulda swore they were different but after i looked it up they might not be.

the heads are a HUGE deal tho. on our L03's we've got those worthless swirl port heads which flow about as well as a leaf blower trying to do its work through a straw. my tbi before i changed the gears got 26mpg when I was being nice to it... my opinion is youll b money ahead if u get the TPI heads (i forget the number... 081 maybe?) or some 906 or 062 vortec heads with an LT1 cam and get the TBI tuned.

to each his own but jus know if you ever decide to do more to it someday the TPI gets really restrictive over 4500 rpm.

youll probably be a little cheaper too if you dont go with the TPI.

really just search on here and talk to ppl who have done it. look at their final costs and hp numbers and see what they had to do to get it in ie: dropping the fuel tank to get to the pump etc etc.

nd heck what a lot of ppl will tell you is dont even bother wasting time on a 305. go find a 350 and stick in it as long as you have the A4 or if your really bent on the TPI find a TPI 350 and drop it in... then youll really notice the power.

Re: TBI To a TPI 1992 Camaro RS

First off thanks so much for your input. This site is like gods gift to mankind. Other than camaros that is.

I put about 200$ a month away for my car. My budget is currently like a grand. In a few months I will have more money to put into it, but I am not looking to throw 2 or 3 grand under the hood at once right now. I was thinking of fixing it up overtime. If changing to TPI is going to run a few grand before the car runs good, and its gonna have to run crappy for a few months, then I dont want to put lots of stress on the motor. I am also going to use this as a day to day car so I was thinking of doing mods that didnt totally screw my MPG up. Thats what caught my eye of the TPI in the first place.

This is a easy and cheap swap. You will have alot more power when done. I swaped my 92 firebird convertible from tbi to tpi. I am running the stock heads and it runs great. Before this thing had no *****. Now it will get up and go. You just have to look around for the parts to find a deal. I paid $ 300 for my complete TPI , wireharness ,computer and fuel tank with the correct fuel pump. All the parts came from a 91 GTA so it looks all stock. Just wait you will find the parts cheap.
