406 swap... parts list?

If I swap to a 400, I know I need to change the starter, what about the tranny inspection cover, what do I replace it with? Or do I modify the stock one?

As for the heads, can I convert to fastburn heads and still use non-roller lifters or do I have to convert the 400 to aftermarket roller-lifters?

I'm thinking about converting my '93 TBI Caprice to a +.030 400 that I have in the garage with Fastburn heads and the Edelbrock Multi-Point Vortec TBI conversion. Any input?

Along with the starter you'll also have to replace your flexplate and balancer everything else should bolt up. You shouldn't have to do anything to your inspection cover. As far as your heads if you use the fast burn heads make sure you get the steem holes drilled. I dont know if the injection system will be up to the task of fuel delivery for the 400 I guess it depends on the mods to the 400. Maybe someone else will be able to tell you more about it.

Sorry man, can't help you on this one. But I was wondering how the '84 turned out with the Vortech heads and hot cam. My buddy just tore down his 6cyl 85 sport coupe and wants to build a 350 for it. I'm looking at the cheap and easy way and those Vortechs are the best bang for the buck as far as I'm concerned. Any dyno info or e.t.'s?

Other than that, what have you been up to? Haven't seen you 'round thirdgen in a while. Last time we talked I think I still had a fully functional LT1. Since then I made a great swiss cheese oil pan and now have all the metal shavings and pretzel rods (literally) to decorate the christmas tree this year without using tinsel. I am, of course, rebuilding - but the machine shop I chose is swamped with work and I don't know if I will have the engine back before the snow shuts me down for the winter. I've still got the garage, but I'm not about to put the vette out in the snow while I work on the RS....unless the truck dies too.

Long story short, I'll have a 355 and about 440hp when I get it back - and then there will be the matter of 12psi intercooled boost But that won't be in effect until I get to the tranny and find a 9" rear.

Its been ok. The car is fast as hell. Needs a brake job and the Jet stage II Quadrajet is WAY too rich, so no hard and fast numbers yet.

What did you do to the LT1? Sounds like it got hosed pretty good.

Thanks for the info cman!

Car: 1985 Z-28
Engine: a big one
Transmission: 4 spd auto soon to be a 6 speed
I am also thinking on doing the same swap. I have the 400 sbc, and I will have the Camero soon. I have been asking around, and I found from some of Thirdgens' members, that the Intake may bolt up, but to flow enough air the intake needs to be ported and bigger throttle bodies and injectors added.

But this is almost the exact same projact for me, the fastburns, everything.

Now I am not absolutly certain, but i am just relaying the info people have told me.

enjoy.

Weird. I'm also doing a similar project. I'm going to use a 400 block, have it bored out and clearanced, and install a Lunati 427 kit. The injection is going to be duel Holley 670 CFM TBI's on an Offey duel quad intake, that will be bolted to Fast Burn heads. I guess the Fast Burns are popular with this particular engine.

I assume that you know that the ports will match for **** with that Offy intake and the Fastburn heads?

The Fastburns have raised runners like the Vortec's and the GMPP raised runner heads. You're going to have serious issues.

I've decided that I'm going to pursue using the RamJet 350 intake with a Howell TPI conversion harness. That way I get all the benefits of a LT1/MiniRam intake without all the limitations of TBI. The RamJet ports will match the FastBurn heads properly.
