engine mounts

im putting a 400 into my 1989 camaro and i was told that the 87 and older motors had different mounts then the 88 and newer cars, so im wondering where to get them and how to tell the difference? thanks Ty.

Solid mounts are for race cars that make massive torque and power. You really don't want that in a street car because it will vibrate your teeth out. Normal motor mounts will hold your engine in place. No need to do anything else.

The stock mounts are all the same.

The stock rubber mounts will eat up the most vibration and engine movement, but they also have the most power loss. (If you don't have a wicked suspension and poly bushings all over the car you aren't gonna gain much with anything better than the rubber stuff anyway. Your sloppy stock suspension will disperse your power anyway.

The poly mounts sit just a litte bit higher than the stock rubber mounts. They are a stiffer than rubber, but they still give some.

The solid motor mounts have no slack/give and thus no power loss. Thats why they run em on drag cars. But all the harmonics of the engine are put into the car. Everything rattles.

You can bolt in a big block with the same mounts and bellhousing.

ok well i was told that pre 88 motors have the rubber mount on the block and that the 88 and newer blocks had the rubber part on the k member and that there were different motor mounts that i would have to buy because i was putting a pre 88 block in my 89 camaro. im not trying to lie or anything i was just asking because it didnt make sense to me and i was just makeing sure that there wasnt anything special that i would have to buy

Now let's put this into perspective. How much "power loss" are we talking about here? It's statements like this that make impressionable kids waste money on useless parts.

I Doubt anybody knows exactly how much wheel torque is lost with rubber mounts. Thats why I tell people unless you are committed to upgrading every bushing on the car to something harder than rubber its kind of a lost cause to get all wrapped up in motor mounts. And If you do that you still have chassis flex if you don't cage the car.

That's why the forum is here. So we call all share experience and help each other with our projects.

I've never seen that but I haven't seen everything. Have you looked at the motor mounts you have?

i had the moroso solid mounts in my '85 t/a, and in my '91 camaro. i never had any problems in either car, and no they were not race cars. both engines were street driven re-builds, and i couldn't tell any difference in vibration with the rubber or the solid ones. the car twisted slightly more with the solid mounts when i revved it up, but completely tolerable. just have to make sure that you order the frame side mounts and the engine side mounts with the moroso mounts, they aren't sold together.
