Re: 502 or 350?
I disagree with the first half of what kid just posted. Because either one would be more fun on the street than a 305. But in this scenario, the 502 isn't that much more fun unless you invest in stronger trans and rear, plus everything necessary to make it hook. The chassis and suspension stuff, not just tires.

A 502 will have about twice the torque and horsepower as a Goodwrench 350. That's a pretty substantial difference, both in what you have to do to accommodate them, and what they'll do when running.
Decide what you're looking for first, then decide which engine to get.

Ahh, but getting the engine cheap isn't the end of it. Installing a bigger, more powerful engine means beefing up the rest of the driveline and suspension to handle that power. The cost doesn't stop at just the engine.
Unless you're on a real budget, inexpensive aluminum street heads and an aluminum intake on a BBC can drop the weight down to an iron head SBC.

Just on prepping the car for a 383 Stroker, the cost is roughly $4K

Re: 502 or 350?
well I went ahead and started a budget proposal for my 383 build and roughly on prepping the car for a 383, not including the engine, my tally came out to approximately $5K.. with the 12 bolt Moser Rear end taking a big chunk of the pie... then came the panhard rod, Sway bar set, Brake upgrade... Sub Frame Connectors....

Re: 502 or 350?
Just start slow like I did. Look at my signature and you'll see everything I've done. Start with the suspension and make sure it's good. Next I'll be putting in a rear end meant to handle some power. After that my manual swap will take place. Then the 4-bolt 350 will come out of my truck, get cleaned up, rebuilt, and dropped in. You can't just drop in a big engine and think you're done. 20 years ago we had top of the line suspension, but seriously, mine was junk because of previous owners abuse. Now I'm on rails, but I'm still not done yet. Just take your time and the wait will help make it more fun and worth it.

Re: 502 or 350?
im glad im from wisconsin
but reading this hes seems to be new, whih is fine but like everyone said pick up the engine you want. my suggestion let it sit and accumualte parts. your 3k will go into that engine and you wont get what you want out of it, just wont hook up. buy the block and let it sit. Upgrade suspension and look for deals on trans and rears. Last thing would be the engine.

Re: 502 or 350?
The 350 would probably work out better for you in the long run. They are more than powerfull enough for most folks. Including the 500 bucks I scored my 454/turbo 400 I think it cost like 3 grand in miscellaneous stuff to get the car back on the road.
The rear ends life depends completely on what you do with it. If you leave hard street tires on it and don't get a locker/posi/sticky tires it will last longer. I've been running my stock 7.5 behind every engine I've had in my car for the last 8 years. Even the 454/TH400 where I would mercilessly hammer it at times. So long as you don't shock the driveline with high rpm launches and grippy tires itll be fine. Little things like letting the throttle out during shifts helps alot. I would rather burn up tires all day long then get nasty hook and es splode my diff.
Gasoline for a car with no overdrive (the muncie mentioned) will kill ya. Unless this thing is just gonna be a toy for driving on sunday. Especially if your in CA like me where gas at the pump is 3.20+ crack pipes per gallon.
I've been looking at all kinds of transmission options for a SERIOUSLY powerful engine on the street and it looks like a T56 is the best compromise.
