Swapping something COMPLETELY ridiculous into a 87.

Ok, so my dad and I just procured an 87 SC (basically the last year Berlinetta) with a 305. We have decided to do a total overhaul on her, my job is to rip out the entire interior except the dash and put in 4th gen seats, new carpet, headliner, etc. and take care of the body work. (swapping to Iroc bumpers, adding ground effects parts and eventually paint)

Now comes the fun part.

For some reason my dad has the idea of spending an assload of money on a motor capable of tearing our poor little Camaro apart. We have the money for such a thing, hopefully spending less than 10 g's on our driveline and air/fuel delivery in total. I just need some direction here. Now his goal is like 500 damn horses, but I know how crazy that is haha.

We were checking out the GMPP crates and trying to find some cheaper online prices for them, and it's going pretty good, but I'm just not sure what swaps are realistic. So far he likes the ZZ502.I was thinking about getting the Fast-Burn 383 and adding a hotter cam and later a supercharger to reach such a goal. What do you guys think? also, i need some wisdom about the tranny work that will be necessary, and rear end work. Forgot to mention that automatic is a must, I don't know why but that's what he wants.

I was looking at proformance unlimited too, their engines look AWESOME but seem too good to be true, whats the deal with them?

Mainly we just want a not-too-difficult swap and a plausible route to lots of ponies. Any other motors you guys suggest or ideas, feel free. thanks.

Re: Swapping something COMPLETELY ridiculous into a 87.

Any swap is possible with enough time and money. A 502 is just another short deck BBC. Read the sticky at the top of the forum on doing a BBC swap. The SBC is a basic drop in. Externally the SBC is the same from the old 283's from the 1950's to an aftermarket 434.

There's a lot more potential to make more power with a BBC providing you don't mind the initial expense of doing the swap. The bigger the engine, the easier it is to make more HP with lessor octane fuel. A 500 HP 383 is not like a 500 HP 502.

You you decide on a 502, consider going right to a 540. Externally, they're the same so the cost of the swap is the same.

When upgrading to much higher HP levels, the rest of the driveline will need to be replaced. The tiny 7.5" 10 bolt is the first thing that needs to be replaced.

500 is not too hard to reach. If you go crate, Fastburn 385 with a much hotter cam and intake will get you there more than likely.

For a street strip car I like the idea of a 383 since it makes a good deal more torque than 350's. 500 is pretty easy to get with a 383 and good heads.

So if I go with the Fastburn which cam/intake would you guys recommend? Or honestly what gives me the most bang for my buck? I know it sounds juvenile but the cheapest way to attatin that 500 and lotsa torque. Id rather get my hands dirty and spend less money as long as the swap is doable

With a 350 you wont have "lots" of torque but can make lots of hp. Getting near 500 hp is doable but it wont make the torque a 383 will. Still enough torque to melt tires but not brutal low end like a big block

Fastburn 385 is just ZZ4 with better heads....but there are better heads than fastburns. You could buy a ZZ4 crate, sell those heads and put on some Profilers/AFR/Dart heads and have abit better platform. Need to mill the heads down abit to keep compression up as its only 9.6 to 1, i'd rather see higher with big cam and aluminum heads.

If you kept the fastburn head, I'd try a ported performer RPM or just jump to a single plane intake if keeping carbed. Single plane may have advantage over 6000-6500 rpm but gives up some driveability and low end performance... A good ported dual plane intake SHOULD beable to support 500hp.

Cam, something in the mid lower 230's like GM 847 cam or possibly comp cams 280XFI, or definately a custom grind from one of the big grinders like Bullet cams, Mike Jones, Cammotion perhaps, and several others out there.

I think that will make for a strong running 350 but I'd like to see compression closer to 10.5 to 1.

450lb-ft + 401HP + 100 nitrous= 500hp
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...der_heads.html

or build it with fast burn heads, different cam, more compression for 500hp
