lg4 to l69 swap

i have a 85 camaro sports coupe with lg4 it is carb and the engine needs a rebuild. i want to put in a crate engine instead. its a daily driver so im looking for a quick swap. will a l69 long block from the same year bolt right in. will the fact they only made those in manual tranny make a difference. do i need a new chip or exhaust. i was just going to mod the carb a bit. bolt it all in and work from there. use same harness and everything. eventually ill go dual snorkel and get new exhausts. maybe have a chip burned. but thats later. i cant find any info on this swap. someone help me also i live in cali so i need to pass emmissions laws. im keeping all that system

Re: lg4 to l69 swap

someone makes l69 crate engines?i had a 1984 camaro with a l69 and automatic.the l69 had 350 manifolds and a special ypipe that hooked to a corvette cat.i guess you could use the 305 manifolds and exhaust.the l69 had a carb with electronic parts in it so you may need additional wiring.

Re: lg4 to l69 swap

It would swap in, but it would be a waste of time.

Agreed. The whole "305 vs 350" thing. If you have a nice/fresh/sound 305, there's no sin in modding it. But, if there's a rebuild in the cards, it makes absolutely no sense to re-do a 305.

Re: lg4 to l69 swap

Not even that, but the only difference inside the block between an 85 LG4 and an L69 is the cam.

Except in Canada, so did the LG4. No additional wiring needed.

As far as the California thing, '85 B-bodies had 350s with the computer carb, so a "motor change" to a 350 is possible. The only possible glitch would be the LG4 vs. L69 headers (you don't want to do LG4 headers...).

But, you don't really need to make it hard on yourself. Get a 350 shortblock, put your 305 heads and everything else on it. Get L69 headers, Y-pipe, and cat (you'll also need an L69 EFE valve). Keep the cam reasonable, and you won't have to worry about it passing the sniffer. The only possible hang-up would be if the smog tech looked up the C.A.R.B. # on the headers and saw it was for VIN G instead of VIN H, in which case you'll have to do the full L69 thing (which only means the dual snorkel air cleaner) and the "motor change" tech will give you a new sticker. Most likely it'll never get that far.
