Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

I will finally do it. This car will be a weekend warrior with some racing at our 1/4 track. I just ordered me some hooker swap headers! This big block is coming out of a 74 corvette.

Cool. What are you doing to the engine? What are you doing for transmission/rear end?

Less power than a stock LS1. So, they'll probably be fine...

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

I received my hooker swap headers yesterday and noticed that they are different from the first 2226hkr I had purchased about 5 years ago . Went back to the jegs website and it says they have been improved and redesigned . We shall see if they are a better fit than the old header design .

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

Keep us informed. Maybe they finally listened to the consumers about how bad the design was. For how much they cost, they better fit better.

They're still only a street header. With 1-7/8" primaries and 3" collectors, they're going to be restrictive for high rpm or large cubic inches.

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

I will report back with the fitment. I'm hoping they don't turn out to be to restrictive for my 498, I should not need to go much above 6k rpms . I'm going down in primary size as the ones for the corvette are 2" primaries and the same size collector.

Drove the '74 vette for last time , atleast for a while. Started taking the engine out to put into the Camaro.

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

I almost went BBC but built a 406 instead. I got a 454 block 2 sets of rect port heads and a ls6 steel crank. I also got a 4l80e and a ford 9 but still havent got the 4l80e installed yet. A BBC is still very competative even with the mighty LS series of engines out there. You can get over 800 cubic inches and they still make and develope heads for the old mark IV that way out flow any LS head.

My only question, and a little off topic, is why take a stingray off the road and build a third gen. I mean I love my car but I'd love to have a vette to drive as well.

man you have some pretty cool cars in your sig. i too wondered why the 74 vette was loosing its engine to a camaro, but im guessing you have "better" plans for the vette

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

Look for some Ed Quay headers. They fit great. I sold mine on here a few years ago when the 440 (.060" over 427) came out of mine. Those hookers are a restricition on anything other than a stock bbc or a 396 imo.

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

I plan to put a Lsx engine in the vette later on. Also the camaro is better suited for drag racing which is what this big block was built for. I plan to dyno tune the camaro and see how much it puts down with the swap headers.

Hopefully I can get it running good again. This vid is when I had a solid roller w/a 680ish lift

A little update , the motor and tranny are in. A note for anyone doing a 12 bolt swap , the conversion u joint part#for a stock driveshaft and yoke for a 700r4 and a chevelle 12 bolt is neapco or duralst gold # 3-3130 .

A sound clip of the motor running ( it's actually a phone video but the quality sucks) . The cam sounds tamed considering it's a 650ish lift hyd. roller . It's got a 4-7 swap comp. cam. I couldn't really hear any difference in exhaust note. http://s870.photobucket.com/user/big...dfdda.mp4.html

Re: Decided to do a bbc swap into '86 Camaro

big motors sticking out of the hood are way cooler than regular looking ls sitting nicely in the engine bay imo.

im looking at dumping a big block in my car as well and i was wondering how satisfied you are with those headers? is it worth the price?

Throw on a tunnel ram and it looks even more impressive. A roots blower would just scream HP. Yes, there is a tunnel ram on my engine. The engine sits lower than stock so it doesn't poke through the hood as much. I used to have an aeroscoop over the toilets but the Hilborn style scoop looks so much better.

The camaro is up and running. Now moving on to paint, hopefully I do a good job at it. As you can see it needs it.

Paint is only for show. It does nothing for performance. If you make it look like it should go fast, it better go fast.

I've got my power steering running now. It was a chore to turn without it on the street and having a spool .

One of the biggest difference is the removable primary tube on cyl# 2 on the early design ,it's so longer removable and the bend is very different.

Admittedly off-topic and non-tech, but curious if you are in western Texas, or in West, Texas.
