I'd personally stroke a 350 before building a 400, but that's just me.

Re: Budget 406 What will it make?
It should make 500 HP eeeeezy, maybe 550 if your tuning skillz are truly mad.
ONCE.
I don't think it'll make it twice.
The crank will break at the front; either the snout will break off, or it'll break right in front of the #1 throw, or it'll break where the #1 throw meets the rod pin.
Guess how I know this...

Re: Budget 406 What will it make?
I appreciate all the advise, and know the horror stories of the 400 blocks, but I've seen them take a ton of punishment with less parts than I have in mine and get hammered with nitrous on top of that for money during Street races, but this combo was put together inexpensively to be a much better than stock street cruiser, no more, no less, here is the parts breakdown:
406 True Street Driven built on great deals and hand me down parts:
Production 400 block ( FREE)
Production 400 cast Crank. ( FREE)
SRP Professional Series Flat Top pistons w/rings 405 grams (1.5/1.5/3.0 mm rings) ($605.00)
Pro Comp pro-lite Rods 6.00in. ( FREE)
RHS Pro Topline 235 heads w64 chambers (out of the box). ($300.00 fully assembled)
Edelbrock Victor E (out of the box).( $100.00 brand new in box)
Holley 950 HP carb. (Had from my Pontiac since going Dominator)
Canton 1in. Super Sucker. (Had from my Pontiac since going Dominator)
Bullet S/R .930 bc .626-.626 lift 255*-263* dur @ .050 114* lobe sep
installed at 108*. ($275.00)
Harland Sharp 1.6 rockers. ($235.00)
Professional Prod 7qt pan w/melling M55a pump (complete kit just under $200.00)
MSD pro billet Dist ($300.00 purchased w/digital 6 in package deal)
MSD digital 6 box
Headman Hustler 65165 step headers 1-5/8 to 1-3/4 w/3in collectors ($300.00)
Headers and cam purchased from members here,
Magna fuel 300 pump ($250.00)
Fuel cell. (Free)
also assorted gaskets, ARP head studs, other fasteners that nickle and dime you along the way, but you get the idea, kinda inexpensive dont you think?
Plus glass hood, k-member, suspension parts, manual steering box, ac delete heater box, astro van steering shaft, and other goodies found on this and other sites I frequent, I figured it could make about 550 H.P. And not have trouble from new, Camaros, Stangs, and Vettes, as well as the AWD tuners!lol

What will you be doing with the car? Daily driver? Weekend warrior? Drive-in cruiser?

Re: Budget 406 What will it make?
Just a Tough weekend Cruiser, I may take it to the track to see where it's at, but for the most part it will be driven only a few days during spring and summer months for wow factor, I already have a Race car that I don't get to have fun with, so this will fill in for the times I can't make the track, why do you ask. Bro?

To understand whether the build you're spec'ing out will be disappointing for the use it sees, won't last, etc.

I'm not going to talk about the durability, but that is a 550 to 575hp motor if it is tuned correctly.

Re: Budget 406 What will it make?
I'm gonna do my best with it, the carb is directly off my Firebird, which was jetted for that, but shouldn't be too far off the mark, as for timing, the Msd Pro billet Is locked out and the timing should fall somewhere between 34* to 38* total! but it must remain pump gas friendly and not detonate! I have Steel heads, not aluminum, so it's not as tolerable to pinging, but if need be, I'll do the leaded aviation fuel at 100 octane, then do some pulls on my buddy's Dyno for the best possible tune up!
