LSx swap and 92-Iroc conversion
Hi Guys,
Just sharing that through the support and resources on Thirdgen.org, I was able to build the car I always wanted. Hope you all achieve your goals as well.
As a bit of context, I've previously had a 95z28 about 15 years ago, and a 71 split-bumper 4 speed which I sold last year after owning for about 7 years. That last car had a lot of character, but despite all kinds of suspension and chassis work, just wasn't driveable more than just on weekends here and there. I wanted something I could get in and drive anywhere, anytime. I sold that car for $15k and came straight to this site to build what i really wanted. An Iroc with an Ls/t56 swap, preferably in white.
It didn't take long and I found a car listed here for sale. It was a 92z28, with an LSx/t56 in white. Major drivetrain work done, but the body though straight, was pitted and faded and the interior was a swap meet free for all. Still the basis was there, plus it has C5 brakes. Prefer the 86-90 panels over the 91-92 but this was a great start. Bought the car and had it sent up to me here in Toronto. Cost me $11,800 with shipping and customs.
I have to admit that when I first got the car I had serious doubts. The body looked like it sat in the dessert for 10 years. No interior headline, dash pad cracked in several places, every seat had a tear, the doors barely opened and squeeked bad, the hood barely closed and wasn't aligned. My 7 year old commented that she thought it had been through a fire.
But it was here and I couldn't sell it the way it was anyways, so I moved forward. And am so glad I did.
Over the next 8 months I went on to:
-Swap the hood, front bumper and lower valance, rear deck lid, rear bumper and quarter flares. All off a white 88 someone was parting out here locally. Cost be about $600 for all that.
- headliner, dash pad, chased down 1000 rattles.
- closed a gaping hole that was cut out of the floor for the shifter
- added a Borla Cat-back
- The car didn't run right, but fortunately a good tune sorted that out - and confirmed I had 386bph to the wheels.
- brand new Luk clutch
- cold-air intake
- added sub-frame connectors
- new springs front/rear
- new shocks
- 18x9.5 Corvette wheels (275/40 + 245/45)
- New deck, Infinity fronts and small amp/sub
The car is a everything I wanted. Sits and corners true and flat, with an endless torque curve and great shifting action. The sound of that Borla is awesome and I can sit in traffic all day with out a hitch.
