I Purchased the GM Performance HT 383 Stroker Crate motor (Part #19332529) for my 1995 Chevy Z-71 Sports side 4x4.with 6" lift kit running 35" Nitto's G2, I upgraded the TBI to the Holly TBI replacement and also had to purchase the Edelbrock TBI manifold. I also put on a set of Headman Headers. The motor has performed pretty good, I have had it into my truck for about 7 yrs. now with about 70K miles on it. What I would like to know is if the motor is too worn to replace the Top End. if not, then can you port and polish the Vortex heads, to get them to an aftermarket style flow, or just purchase the Fast burn heads, or another aftermarket heads, and go with a bit better Camshaft...... i would be willing to spend up to say $2,500 for parts. just don't know if i should stay with GM and maybe purchase the top end components on their GM Performance SP 383 Stroker Crate build (Part #19332532) (Heads, Camshaft, intake) or any suggestions on aftermarket brands. I was told that the Vortex heads tend to crack when you get up in the mileage, so that might be a good enough reason to just shelve them and move on. Can you run a TBI on a Duel Plane type intake? if so then what style or model do i need to be running for a daily driver.

if the engine is in good shape then why not. if it doesn't smoke, doesn't knock, and you've kept up with your oil changes then 70k really isn't anything these days. go for it. buy the best heads and intake you can afford. but in a truck, i'd stick with a combo that produces good low end torque. it's never gonna be fast.

porting is always good, what kind of polishing are you talking about? Polishing the intake ports allows fuel to pool out of suspension and results in a poor burn. Don't do it. Creating even port volumes and leaving a rough port surface would cost more than a good set of heads. idk much about that 383 in particular(throw, rod length, piston specs), but generally they can make really good torque. Assuming a 5000 pounder, you're talking about a 10:1 power to weight ratio if you can get it to make 500hp, trucks are heavy, as Sierra6 said. so you need to decide exactly what you're trying to achieve, $2500 might get you a decent set of heads, but maximizing the power through the head requires other parts..... (cam, intake, exhaust system, depending on the dimensions and specs of what you already have)
