Remove Catalytic Coverter on a 3.1L V6-engine?
Hi there,
(first, sorry for my bad english, i´m a german...)
has anybody removed his catalytic converter on his V6? (i´ve got a camaro 1991, 3.1liter all original!)
does it improve the horsepower or torque?
and what´s about the sound?
...and i know it´s not legal...
thanks in advance, Philip from Germany:lala:

Well i removed my catalytic converter on my 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, its got the 3.1L V6 engine.
Sound- Much louder, when u start the car it sounds awesome. U rev it and its loud, not V8 loud, but not *****, so its hard to explain. Then the sound becomes a bit rattling at certain rpms, like the low end, but when your on the throttle like 65% down it sounds better.
Performance- Yes i did get an improvement, i can feel the car just can get to certain rpms quicker, not a big change, but enough for someone who drives the car everyday to notice it. So it basically feels as if it breathes better, even though its exhaust related. But then again i put in new KN filter, from my stock dirty filter, and also new spark plugs, wires, oil filter, and ZMax. (which i probably wont use on my 87 GTA, but it works fine on my Grand Prix)
Pros- Is alot louder than stock, and if u dont mind the loud exhaust, then go for it. I got a little performance increase, i wish i can dyno it, or G-tech it, but its to late for that.
Cons- If u drive the car everyday, and are in it alot, and dont want a loud sound, maybe u should forget it, and just buy some performance mufflers to give u more sound. Yes its illegal, so if u have emission controls where u live, it might be hard. It also of course pollutes more to the environment.
Overall- Its cheap, and a quick way to give u that performance, and sound increase.
But honestly though, its really more worth if u had a V8, or a high powered V6, TTA, GNX?
Whatever u do though good luck, and have fun!

Hi,
thanks for reply!
first, what´s a ZMax ?(something like chiptuning?)
And yes, it´s more fun with a V8, i´ve got a 2nd Gen Camaro 305 with edelbrock performer package, 295/50/15, highjacker, sidepipes, scoop and so on. but this is my oldtimer who i drive only very rare.
my V6 is my daily driver!
Ok, i think i will install an open air-filter and change the cat to an empty pipe- do anybody know an manufacturer who offers an exhaust-pipe who fit´s on the place of the cat ???? ???
thank you, Philip from Germany :lala:

Well Zmax is a liquid formula that u pour into your gas tank, or oil, and transmission, and its supposed to help further clean your engine and inner components and help them run smoother.
Go here for more info on ZMAX: http://www.myfavoriteshop.com/shopZ/zmax.html
I dont know of any manufacturer that makes pipes, i just got mine at a muffler shop, and they got me 18inch pipe with the sides flanged out, with clamps to. Um also i know i can get them at local auto stores, so they shouldnt be to hard to find.
If u cant find a pipe, u can just gut the cat, u know take it out, take a long screwdriver, or steel tube or something and remove all the screens and junk from inside the cat, just make sure u wear a mask, after that, pop it back in, and u got a free flowing cat.
Maybe some other guys can help u out in more detail.
