I hate Hedman Hedders

Oh my ***! What a pain in the ***. I just spend about 4 hours to put in a set of hedman long tubes. I knew I was going to have trouble with my clutch slave cylinder, but i didn't know that it wasn't going to clear part of the frame and i also didn't know that half the bolt holes are in the wrong place! I had to take a drill and drill new holes for 5 of the bolts. I am so frustrated with them. I got them on and they do sound really mean with open headers Well thats enough ranting from me. Anyone else have these problems or did I just get a crappy set?

What do you guys think about shorty hedders? Are those as hard to install as the long tube hedders?

Long tubes are typically harder to install than shorties on our cars.

I had clearance problems behind the drivers side control arm but I knew about it before I started thanks to some searches here but that was it.

Shorties are not exactly a piece of cake - but...

I just installed Hedman shorties. I did not have any real bad problems with mine. I did my homework before I started and I had a good idea of what would have to move before I even started. My problems were mostly with getting the old manifolds off the car. They had been in place for fourteen years. Thank Gawd for PB Blaster!

After the manifolds were off it went pretty good. I did have to do a little work with a grinder on the drivers side collector flange to ensure that I had clearance but that was not too bad.

I think putting any brand of headers on a thirdgen would be a CAST IRON FEMALE DOG. You just have to expect that it won't be easy, take your time, don't get frustrated, and do it right the first time.

it maybe just me...but i have to take a cherrypicker and lift up the block to make my shorty hedmans go in. the 350 is from a 69...but i wouldn't think its any different. my friend bought the same headers for his stock camaro and he had no probs.

Headers suck, no matter what car they are going into. Longtubes always suck to install though, shorties are easier.

It took me quite a while to install mine as they did not even come close to clearing on the drivers side. I grinded about a pound of metal off of my T/A and dented the tubes and still have less than 5 mm clearance in some spots. Took 3 days till I was satisfied of the fit.

Car: 1991 Z28 Camaro
Engine: L98
Transmission: 700R4 that will magically turn into a 6 speed one day.
My headers were a PITA to install, but it was the first time and I did everything backwards. After tearing the top of the engine apart, I jacked the car up enough to get them in from the bottom, slid right in almost on the first try. I even took the drivers side out about 5 times to modify it to clear the a-arm and weld in the o2 bung....twice. Took me about 3 days at about 3 hours a day. If I were to do it again, I could have it done in probably less than 3 hours. Doing things by yourself is a GREAT learning experience, and I do love the sound of my longtubes.

That makes two of us. I had the stupid air tubes getting in my way and im not even using them now. I ****en hate the passenger side, that ****en last bolt is a SOB. I spent 1-2 hours on that bolt alone doing 1/2 turns with an allen wrench from the top with a metal pipe over the allen wrench for leverage and then to the bottom of the car for 1/2 for about 2 hours.

I currently have Flowtech Shorties.. they almost fell in. took all of 30 minutes to install. the bolt holes didn't line up perfect, but a little coaxing with the drill and the holes lined up perfect.

here is one pic i have of the clearance..

and yah, i know they look like a$$

The instructions that come with the Hedman Shorties say you will have to jack up drivers side of engine. No problem there, but I will be damned if the fricking holes line up for ****. My car has Dart heads on it, so the y pipe took some engineering too. BTW, I posted on another exhaust thread that they leak like SOB, always have. LOL

Hedman Leaks

Yeah,

My headers leak too, but they seal nicely when I take the time to re-torque the header bolts. I've about gotten sick of crawling under the car to re-torque but that's not the header's fault.

I have a set of Locking bolts for the next time I crawl under there...

Other than that I REALLY like my (ACS Coated) Hedman Headers...

I installed the Shorties. It wasn't too much of a problem. I read on this site of the experiences of several other people doing the same upgrade so I had a good idea of what would have to come off to get the manifolds off and the headers on. I would advise anyone doing the job to go ahead and jack up both sides (one side at a time) when putting the headers in place. It really does make it a lot easier!

My bigest problem was getting the old manifolds off. They had been in place for fourteen years!

My advice to anyone putting on headers is this: 1) do your homework. Know what has to happen to get the old off and the new on. 2) go ahead and get any special tools you might need (I used a gear ratchet in some of the tight spots) 3) Don't get in a hurry. If you find yourself getting frustrated take a few minutes off and start again... 4) if you have any new cuss words you've been meaning to try now is a good time!

I just put mine in today took me about 4 hours to do it. The old wasnt that hard, I just got mad at the million and one bolts I had to take out just to get those friggin manifolds off. Then I used my saw to cut the y pipe and it all fell out....then I tried getting that damn Pass. side in and I had to take out the motor mount bolt andl ift the motor up on the Pass side and it slid in pretty easy. Then I let the motor back down, reinstalled them otor mount bolt and ws preparing for the fun fest of the Dirviers side. I got under the car and slid it right up in a total of 5 seconds....I bolted everything up (NO PS now, cant figureo ut how to do a bracket for that). Its open headers right now, but man o man, it sounds friggin sweet, I swear, I was sittin at a light and it sounded like a Drag car That cam and the headers complimented each other :d Anyways thats just my 2 cents.

BTW, I used Heddman Long tubes.

Thanks
