I was thinking of doing like the 2nd gens and having a double tip on each side behind the tires....

I just wonder if that would make it to loud since the sound would be directed towards the sides...

I changed the tips on my 87 last summer.. I got a new muffler, and was planning on running new tips, so I lowered the tailpipes so I could cut a little bit off later and weld on different ones, because I hate the ones that the car came with, but then the ones I had on there scraped on the speedbumps, so I inverted the tips. looks really good, or really bad, depending on your angle.

when I had my 80 series on the LG4 i ran dynomax exhaust tips.

same design as stock, just a quarter inch bigger, and mandrel bent.

I loved the look myself. Cool and under control, nothing too flamboyant

I'll throw the flow back on her once I piece together a catback...

... except for ground clearance issues I do like my thrush magnums pretty well

I must buy an angle grinder and take care of them, they spoil the rear end. However theres something very agricultural about them that I like but still they have to go.

Thats just how my 3" mandrel bent tip hangs, right before the rear end, it sounds awesome, when its under a load into the throttle, its definitely loud with the longer 3" single bullet muffler also. My buddy heard me from about a mile away when I drove past his work, down the street from my house, I have a video now of the car too. But heres the tip again.

The only time fumes get in the car, is if I only open the passenger side window, a little bit, I would just leave both windows open a bit, mind you theres no cat, but the exhaust smelled great and ran the best with 47 psi of fuel pressure. I can talk on a cell phone inside the car without talking loudly, but when you get above 2250 rpm, it gets much louder, the exhaust is very nice and mellow up to 60 mph, once your over that, it gets, louder, lol. I like it alot, I had a clear idea of what I wanted for the sound and performance for the car, and with the edlebrock headers, y and the exhaust I setup, it will support 450 hp, without losing any torque or hp. Thats why I love bullet mufflers, better sound that flowmasters, almost 0 backpressure, and for 36$ each you can't go wrong. I have a video clip I may try to put on the site here soon.

on my 92 firebird i have the hooker cat back i had to cut the tail pipes back like 5 inches once installed so they are like flush with my bumper. on my 85 trans am i have a flowmaster cat back i mounted the tips almost completely hidden so i didnt have to put some high maitnance tips on there since it is driven daily. i have never had problems with either of my cars getting dirty on the bumpers i think that is from people putting alot of miles on theyr cars between washes

Mine are just slightly tucked. The T/A bumper rolls under on the bottom, so I've got my tips on about the same plane as the license plate. Just enough to show, but not so they stick out. Besides, they're 5 year old Hooker tips, so the chrome's all scruffy anyhow. Gotta get some new ones....

No good closeups, but here's the pic:
