One clogged CAT?

Hi again. I have an 84 T/A with an 88 5.7 TPI. I had one of the CATS replaced some months ago due to it clogging (most likely from running too rich) I have since also replaced the distributor(See previous posts). Awhile back I had to stop driving it because it was stalling and running very rough. It threw a TPS code, so I adjusted that and the code went away. It was also throwing MAF and MAF BURN OFF codes. So after a few months of sitting and saving I bought a new MAF and installed it. But that didn't solve my problem, and not only that, but I drove it to the gas station and when I got in to leave it would not shift out of first gear (700 R4) it has park, reverse, and neutral but in any of the forward gears OD, D, 1, 2 the tranny won't come out of first. I had a thought that maybe my other CAT (dual CATs)ended up clogging so bad that it's throwing my motor out of whack? Thereby causing a timing type shifting issue with the tranny? Help please I miss my car! I'll answer any questions that will help you to help me. Thank You.

Re: One clogged CAT?

My MAF diagnosis is rusty, but if it sets the 33 and 36 MAF/Burnoff codes, that usually means the relays on the firewall are bad.

As far as the transmission issues, that sounds like the tranny is slowly dying and needs a $1000 rebuild. There is nothing in the engine that would affect the tranny, except the TV cable connected to the throttle body. That must be connected in order to provide extra pressure to the trans when you step on the throttle.

Re: One clogged CAT?

Okay, maybe the trans needs work, maybe it doesn't. That's why I'm here. The first and only person to reply tells me to take it to the shop. That's defeating the whole purpose of this web site. I know that a faulty MAF Burn off relay, in conjunction with a NEW MAF will not cause the car to run the way it does. I also know that a mis adjusted TV cable will cause the trans to shift all kinds of funny - so why not not at all? There is nothing I could try, test or check to narrow my problem down? I have a brain and I can use it! Just give me some knowledge to put into practical application!

Re: One clogged CAT?

If you've lost forward gears, but park, reverse, and neutral work, then your tranny crapped itself. Take it to a shop.

The TV cable adjusts shift POINTS. If the car doesn't SHIFT, the TV cable can't adjust shift points. If PRN work, then the linkage that goes from your shifter to your tranny works, and something in the transmission has gone wrong to lose forward gears.

Edit: Oh, and if you haven't checked fluid and the like, do that. If the fluid is full, smell some. If it smells burnt, you have tranny issues.

Re: One clogged CAT?

Well, I have one forward gear; first gear. I checked the fluid, and it's about a quarter inch above the full line with the car cold. I know you are supposed to check it hot, but, the car won't really go to get it hot. Anyway the fluid looks and smells like I just put it in there. Would a bad governor cause it to not shift?

Re: One clogged CAT?

If it is not shifting up at all, youve most likely lost the 1-2 clutch pack or a planetary. Although I suppose the shift governor might do that, I'm NOT a tranny expert.

You have 2 seperate issues. #1 is possibly blown tranny, #2 is MAF codes, check your maf connectors at the sensor and the relay. Wiggle them a bit, does it change idle? Could be a loose connection.

Re: One clogged CAT?

thanks guys. I guess it's probably not the CAT and I should probably seek help on the transmissions/drivetrain board. I appreciate your advice.

Re: One clogged CAT?

Turns out the shifting problem was due to the gear on the shift governor being broken. Replaced the gear, shifts through all forward gears now. Thanks for your help!
