Slip fit cats

I'm getting this cat for my car
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
it's a 3 inch slip fit, it's for my 2055's with the 3 inch y-pipe, now will this slide over the pipe or will the pipe slide over this? I'm not sure as to how the slip fit cats work, is it made a little bigger than 3 inches so it can slip over? Thanks in advance.

Re: Slip fit cats

you are in california so it is not legal here. they cant even ship it into the state. if you replace a cat you need to get the obd II for your obd I car.
i know that is not the question you asked but you should know it before you blow 80.00 plus shipping and tax.
i bought one yesterday - cal obd II with carb number and all. brand new. the only people that i know of that make it for our car is magnaflow and to get a 3 inch you had to buy the approved universal carb one. they have them on e-bay. they say they want 159.99 for them but you can make an offer - start at 115.00 and they will accept at 120.00 or was it 130.00? no tax and no shipping charges.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...%3AIT&viewitem= is the link and its a mag 36019 and as of yesterday carb approved it for our cars. they may change their minds tomorrow but for today its legal for us.

Re: Slip fit cats

Do I need to swap it to OBDII for emissions reasons? Or because it will cause the car to run differently ( i don't see how it could since there's nothing that could read any different results) because I pay a little bit extra to get it to pass inspection.

Thanks for the info though

But does anyone know whether they just slip on or not?

BTW I'm shipping it to nevada first

Re: Slip fit cats

you need to swap it in for carb reasons - the new cat regs have all sorts of crazy things in them.
they may require you to prove it was installed before 1/1/09, and that might mean a receipt. if your cat needs a muffler shop to install it, they will not do it - they can lose their license.
cats, like everything else, have part numbers on them that identify when they were made. you get caught with one made after jan 1 and your fake receipt will do you no good and could constitute giving false info to a police officer - a misdemeanor.
its a crime to bring these cats into cal - another crime.
lawyers fees - 2500-5000. time off going to court and then buying the cat that is approved - well a shop wants to charge about 300.00 for that same cat. labor to put it on. and how well could your car stand a detailed investigation/inspection?
spend the extra 50.00 and eliminate all that worry.

Re: Slip fit cats

my car's TBI, not carb.

That's why I was hoping that it will just slip on, instead of having to weld it. I know many different ins and outs where I work so I wouldn't have a problem getting a shop to install it (which I hope I don't have to because that's why I got slip fit in the first place). And I've been stop so many times in my car by cops that I've stopped counting, and they've never asked about the cat or anything, I won't lie to them, I'll tell them that I put an aftermarket cat on it.

So technically the only thing I cannot control would be the police, and like I said, I won't lie to them, they'll probably give me a fix it ticket for illegal modifications or something. If they impound I know the tow yard that does impounds in the area and I could probably work something out with them, I'm not very worried.

Thanks alot for the info though man

Re: Slip fit cats

Hmmm, well the reason I'm so adamant toward this is because I bought the cat from summit like a week ago, but it doesn't ship until like the 16th of may, I can still cancel right?

Tony, does this cat come in 3 in and out?

Re: Slip fit cats

wow, California sucks! They don't do emission's testing here and thank goodness... To answer your question, I believe slip fit cats have a slightly bigger 3in inner diameter to slip over the exhaust tubing on both ends...

Re: Slip fit cats

yes i have one on the way - 3 inch in and out to match the hooker 2055 3 inch ypipe.
and it has the right carb numbers on it and its made by magnaflow - which is carb approved. it also has the air tube.
im matching that up to a 31 inch chambered exhaust to act as a midpipe - i think it might be a bit to loud but i will not know for a couple of weeks - the exhaust are made as ordered, and i ordered mine on saturday. and i think the inner diameter is 3 inches because the y pipe is 3 inch outer diameter so i will use some nice stainless fittings to snug it up.

Re: Slip fit cats

Alright, do you think that since summit didn't even get close to shipping the part can I just call and cancel?

Re: Slip fit cats

you should be its illegal to have in cal.
and the cat i recommended just got here today. i tried it for you. the y pipe fits INSIDE the cat. slips right in.
probably because the outside of the cat - which is dual layers - needs air flow so bolting something up to the outside might fit to close to the cat and not allow it to function properly. look at the ebay site and they have a diagram.
its also a lot shorter than the factory cat.
got you a pic too. hope it loads
good luck
