help me decide on my exhaust system

i've been driving my 84 z28 around for a while with open shortys and i can feel a lack of torque with no back pressure. i finally have the funds to start on my exhaust system. the engine is around 400hp at flywheel. i'm picking up these headers this weekend http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-68460/ . i've been reading some threads on duals, single 3", 4" etc...i know i want a single pipe system because of lack of time and money and i'm fabing myself. so is a 3" single system ok for street-strip or should i go 3.5" or 4"? i have dual 2.5" on my s10 and it has amazing torque but its maybe 300hp at the flywheel. thanks guys!!

Re: help me decide on my exhaust system

ur best bet is probably a magnaflow or flowmaster kit. Both easy to install and not too expensive. Magnaflow will flow better and is stainless steel which will pretty much outlast the car. If u want a louder exhaust, u will want to choose flowmaster. And if ur making ur own, 3" pipe is good for that setup.

For flow wise on ur motor, it won't really matter which one u chose. Both are 3". Just how they bent the tubing and mufflers are different. If you are thinking about putting a more aggresive motor in ur car in the future, i would consider magnaflow over flowmaster.

i am running a magnaflow kit on my car and i love it. Sounds great at WOT.
For how much time u put into fabing it urself, it would be a lot easier to do a kit. And time is money.....Took maybe 2 hours to install and should last as long as the car does.

I guess just do what u would like. i like the kits but if u can make an exhaust system make sure post some pics and sound clips

If your building your own system, then our suggestions won't do you much good.

But are you going over the axle or a side exit? Side exit will be louder & lighter.

Re: help me decide on my exhaust system

i decided to go with the 3" before the y and 3.5" to the rear. i bought these pipes to got into the y http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-18701/ , and the flowmaster y http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLO-Y300350/ . i tried to make mine like this http://userpages.xfoneusa.net/~davidlt/exhaust6.jpg , but my 700r4 won't allow it. what to do now?
