New to the scene 1989 IROC

Hello all. This past spring my dad bought a really nice 1989 IROC with the 5.7 tpi and a dealership installed 5 speed (the 1st owner had it done in 1992 with all factory pieces and such). As I've taken on the task of helping him out with it and such, my research has uncovered that it has the L98 engine, the G92 & N10 option with the dual cat exhaust and the J65 4 wheel discs, and so on.

I've been beating my brains in trying to find some threads pertaining to choosing an exhaust for these cars. The car's bone stock except for the 5 speed swap. I started with the "looking for a catback" sticky until I read somewhere that youre kind of SOL with getting a system for dual cat cars.

He wants a new exhaust, with the ability to add headers someday. I'd like to get him a new system with the piping from the stock manifolds (called a y-pipe right?), upgraded dual cats, and then the upgraded catback exhaust. Does any company offer all this as a bolt in upgrade? I see no reason to ditch the cats alltogether. This is becoming a real headache, almost like the G92 & N10 option make it a lot harder to find a performance exhaust.

One more thing: is there a "welcome" thread around here so I can introduce myself, or is it cool to just jump right in? I really appreciate the help.

Welcome to third gen Sean. I don't know about a welcome thread but there is tons of information on exhaust.

as far as ive found the only person offering a y-pipe for dual cats is dyno don for his headers, otherwise you will have to convert to a single cat or have a custom pipe made which can be expensive

Welcome! What color is your 89?

I just added headers with new Y pipe, cat delete and a Flowmaster exhaust. If you are changing stuff around, get rid of the duals. Also, you will need to have a new chip burned once you change stuff around.

Re: New to the scene 1989 IROC

jrhaus76, I dont think my dad wants to change anything around as far as get rid of the dual cats alltogether or have a custom chip burned. I told him that option is kind of rare and he thinks thats neat. That being said he still wants a new exhaust, keep the dual cats (either the original ones or performance ones) and get headers someday.

The focus now is the exhaust. I did see a magnaflow dual cat setup (part# 23479 off their website) the other day and I wonder if it'll work. I can only assume that everything under the car is the original size tubing and such. It sure looks original to me. I also showed him the catback kit from magnaflow too. He liked the sound but hated the polished tips. He says they stick out too far, and I kind of agree. I wonder if I can cut them back at an angle and sand them for a more satin look?

Oh, and his car is black with the silver iroc decals and stripes. Red interior too.
