Best exhaust system for stock 1991 305?
Just bought the car a few weeks ago and it still has the original exhaust system and I don’t like it I want it to be loud but not over the top so any advice would be nice!

guess it depends on what your definition of loud is. my stock 90 is quite loud. actually a very nice sounding note to it.

honestly for a stock 305, I'd recommend a flowmaster 80 series. I had that one, and it sounded good on the stock exhaust. I always thought chambered exhaust sounded good on these cars

You're not getting a lot of responses because things like "best" and "loud" are subjective, that depends on you.
People like the Flowmaster 80 series, it's loud and aggressive sounding if you like the Flowmaster sound (I personally don't, I think it's metallic and raspy but that's my opinion, they also tend to drone. One of my neighbors has a 3rd gen that's 3 seconds slower than mine in the 1/4 with an 80 series and standing next to my car with him sitting about 30' away I can't hear my car over his). The problem with it is that it does not flow well, it actually flows worse than the factory exhaust with smaller pipes and you will lose HP relative to a factory muffler.
My favorite setup is a single 3" in/out Dynomax Ultraflow welded (about as much flow as you'll get from a 3" exhaust) with a 3" turn down right before the bumper (tucked up so you can't see it). I grabbed a 3" intermediate pipe and made a y-pipe for whatever headers were on the car- I've had the same back section with that muffler on my last 3 cars. At everything except WOT it's probably tamer sounding the factory exhaust (which was actually pretty aggressive sounding on a lot of these cars, the "stock replacements" were quieter than stock). For that matter I have it made with a flange right before the muffler so I can change it in a few minutes if I get bored, sometimes I used to swap in a straight pipe when I felt like being obnoxious. More recently I added a cutout in the intermediate pipe next to the driveshaft. That way I can have everything from my normal quiet cruising around sound to full race car depending on how much I have the cutout open.
I feel that it's by far the best setup, but it also requires you to be able to weld your own or have access to a good shop.
I used to work at a speed shop and the only cat-back that I can think of that EVERYONE liked was the Hooker Aerochamber setup. No droning, just good sound and good performance.

Personally, I'd go with a set of dyno-don shorties and Y-pipe. They're bolt on. From there, get a Magnaflow 3" catback. If you don't like the muffler you can swap it out. Beyond that one, I like the Magnaflow, Aerochamber and Hooker Blackheart sounds the best. The reason I mention the magnaflow is because it's as bolt-on and go as it gets. only a little work to mate it to the y-pipe and cat if you're using one.

I'd go on YouTube and start listening to different exhausts. Don't fall into the "this system makes more power" pitch. If you're stock, it's not going to matter. Just pick what you think sounds the best. I had an 80 series I was happy with. Hooker is also a popular choice.

Re: Best exhaust system for stock 1991 305?
I’ve only had Flowmaster and Magnaflow with and without cats...
This is my Magnaflow with a high flow cat the exhaust shop put on (my original cat had gone bad and was making a noise)... It sounded the same with the straight pipe... They let me demo different setups..
I had a Flowmaster with a hollowed cat on my 87 (305 TPI 5-speed) and it was loud. I thought it sounded good at the time, but I had a neighbor that would call the cops sometimes. When I was at school I had my dad start the car and drive it now and again and they called the cops on my dad for taking the car around the block. My friend had a 5.7L TPI with the factory cat and it was much quieter, but had a more aggressive sound than the stock muffler.
I like the Magnaflow because it’s quiet at idle, but loud when you are driving more aggressive. The exhaust shop told me the Flowmaster would be much louder.
A guy I met at a cruise night with a 5.7L had the same exhaust setup as me from the same shop and it sounded identical. I can’t tell the difference in sound between a stock 305 and 350 TPI motor...
I did like the stock SLP exhaust my friend had on his 1996 Camaro SS... I don’t know what muffler SLP used, but it was nice...

I have an 80 series flowmaster on my stock 91. I think it has a really good sound. its much louder than stock but not stupid loud. it has a much deeper tone. im really happy with it. the flowmaster sound seems like an older hotrod sound vs magnaflow or others. I like the older hotrod sound on older cars. I would be upset if my old thirdgen sounded like a brand new firebird.

Re: Best exhaust system for stock 1991 305?
For exhaust notes. How quiet my GTA was with the SLP catback. internally stock B-body LT1, so small cam, similar to the Peanut cam with Hooker 2055 shorties, no cats, and the SLP cat-back.
At idle the car was SO QUIET despite having no cats and shorties.
That all changed when I did the Cam, heads, and LTs.

And here is a link to the sound of my 305 with GGMG exhaust + DynoDon headers: <<https://www.facebook.com/100011710001969/videos/619352481798413/>>. I have definitely gotten used to the sound over the past two summers of driving it.
