Fuel tank trap door

Fuel tank trap door
I have already had to change my fuel pump once, and doing it the correct way was a bitch. I am not the type of person to cut up my car, but ill be damned if cutting a nice trap door doesn't sound like a good idea. A couple things. Yes, this has been done before on another 92 z28 I used to own, but it wasn't done right. What is the RIGHT way to do it. The best looking way as well. I want it to look damn good, and work damn well. Pics could help if anyone had them? I really need dimensions, and whatever else will help so I can know where to start my cuts and stuff... One more problem that may arise. Obviously, once the door is cut and such, the next thing that comes is cutting the fuel lines, and re-connecting them back together with high pressure hose of some sort. How do I go about cutting the lines without blowing my *** up? Thanks

Re: Fuel tank trap door
I've got a 92 Z28 I just did an LS1 swap and Ls1 gastank swap. Up top I used -AN quick connect type fittings and screwed my -AN lines in to them and they go to the hardlines. Up top someone did one crappy job chopping the car up to get to the fuel pump. So i trimmed it up straight(to the recessed body line) so that the aluminum plate I made would fit flush. Then used some recessed screws to fasten. Came out real clean. Let me know if you need any more ideas.

Well... My idea was going to be more like this. Cut a very nice straight and level trap door. Weld a frame around it, you know, just to make it stronger. Then put a hinge type door, but on the under side of the hinge, lace the edges with maybe that rubber door molding you can buy at autozone, just so when its closes and pulled tight, its sealed. Then have some sort of lock mechanism to keep it closed, maybe a bolt style lock. Ehh sounds good to me. I guess once I get down to doing it i will show pics but hopefully you get the idea...

Re: Fuel tank trap door
Its hard to cut a trap door on the thirdgens because the lines from the fuel sender pretty much start turning down just past the drivers side wheelwell. I'm not saying it cant be done.. But i've tried to cut a trap door in a parts car to get the pump and sending unit out before and it was a PITA by the wheelwell. Almost couldnt get the sending unit out. I would cut where you need to, then clean up the edges. Making a new cover plate might be best but you can still use the piece you cut out. Make sure it is sealed, If you cut a new plate to cover it just drill some short sheetmetal screws in there so its not permanant. Your idea sounds good as well but wont you have an unsightly bulge under the carpet every time you pop the hatch??

Re: Fuel tank trap door
Im going to try and make it as flat as possible... I am trying to make it no higher than about 1 mm, so hopefully you wont even notice it, and even if you do, i mean it will be professional, so when people ask all I have to do is tell them theres a trap door there lol

Re: Fuel tank trap door
If your using a stock sending unit...Than it is a really tight fit. The metal lines are pretty long. I tried to post some pics of my trap door but could not download .bmp files from my cell phone. How about using those quick release fastners..Forgot what they're called. Used on race car body panels. Have a slot in them...You know..

You probably mean the Dzus fasteners, that may be a good alternative to screws facing down towards the tank. I just dropped my tank the other day to replace my weak fuel pump and it was a pita but I figured I'll drop it once then cut an opening for my access panel without worrying about going too deep with the tank in. I don't want to deal with dropping it again. It will be much easier to cut lines while everything is out. I will be rounding off the corners of the opening as to not create any stress points there and may use the quick release fasteners for the cover plate. Later.
