Pistol grip shifter **** build

I have been looking for a new shifter **** for awhile because mine is broken. i haven't had much luck finding a nice looking **** for a decent price. I have now decided to build a pistol grip **** for an automatic trans. The reason being is because it will be easily modified with a button on top. i used wood because i had lots laying around and all the tools for it.

I started out by drawing my design onto paper.

I then copied the design to 3/4 inch foam, and cut it out.

I then drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the middle and test fit it onto the shaft.
I then cut a 1/2 inch dowl to correct size and drilled a hole for the clip.
i then put both of them onto the car for a test fit.

After that I used the foam as a stencil and copied it onto some 3/4 inch wood.

I then drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the middle of the handle, and rough cut it out.
Then I sanded it down till i liked the feel of it, and it was comfortable.

I then test fit it again with the dowl to make sure it would go through all the gears.

I then put on the first coat of paint.

Alright paint is dry so i decided to put it on to see how it looked. still not completly mounted but it does go into all gears.

I got the handle mounted using a set screw still looks the same as the above pic. ^^^

Let me know what ya'll think.

Looks comfy, as for mounting it there is always duct tape, lol. If you have the right woodworking tools and a tap & die set large enough you could drill out the bottom of the handle, place a nut in the handle and gorilla glue it in permanently. Then thread the selector shaft down enough to get a secure grip on the handle, if you want. Looks good so far.

I threaded the shaft, but i can't thread the wood or put a nut in there because the wood is only 3/4in thick and the shaft is 1/2in but i think i have an idea.

And yes i know there is always duct tape, but i would really like it to look nice.

Re: Pistol grip shifter **** build

why dont you try leather wrapping it instead of painting it?

Paint is just temporary for now, and i dont have any leather. The only reason im making this is because my stock shifter is broken, and there aren't many cool automatic shift *****.

Re: Pistol grip shifter **** build

I give you an A for thinking outside the box and making it yourself.

Do a setscrew in the side of it.

when its time to replace your wood one heres a cheap aluminum one.

Thanks, but see the problems with the aluminum ones like is that they would be a lot harder to convert to be usable on an automatic trans.

Re: Pistol grip shifter **** build

nothing but drilling a hole thru the top and dropping the rod and button down in.
Been there , done that years ago. (pistol grib style)

the pic. you quoted is just to show you how to do a setscrew in yours to secure it.

Yeah but to mess up a $40 handle verses three hours of work to make a cheap one. yeah i knew the set screw thats what i ended up doing in the end.
