83 Trans Am 5-speed with 350 mod
83 Trans Am with 350 mod
Location: Woodbridge, VA (Northern Virginia, near Washington DC)
Asking $4,800
Hard-top, 5-speed with 48,000 original miles. Engine swap in 1987 with factory new Chevy 350 4 bolt main. Has special heads that were treated to special valves, springs, 3 angle cut and ported. The intake is a Chevrolet factory mid 1970's 2 plane. The carb is a 650 Holley spread bore with Holley electric fuel pump – choke has been removed. The engine has headers, competition cam and a custom dual exhaust that was fabricated in 1987. Distributor is a 1979 electronic ignition to bypass the 1983 computer.
I recently acquired this from the original owner, but I know little about cars and I cannot afford to keep another car so I must sell. Always garaged, non-smoker. I recently drove it on 2-hr road trip and I think it runs very well. It’s not a fan of cold starts since the choke is removed, however for less than $90 from Holley you can get a new choke for it. Incredible acceleration – this TA can actually go as fast as it looks. 373 gear ratio, WS6 suspension. I have the original factory sticker. Body is in excellent shape – no rust, original paint. Brakes and shocks are original but still in good shape, tires have almost no wear - has the famous bowling ball hubcaps. Some rust on the exhaust pipes but not bad. Interior is outstanding – original with only some fading on the trunk panels. Manual locks and windows. No A/C. Heater works well. Original radio with tape deck (I haven't tried the tape deck to see if it works or not).
Some issues I noticed: there is a crack on the lower windshield several inches long – you can’t see much of it from the inside of the car because it is so low. Parking brake cable needs to be tightened. Windshield washer pump doesn’t work (but you wouldn’t drive this car out in the rain, would you?) Speedometer is a little wobbly at speeds below 35mph. Trunk struts have been replaced but sometimes it doesn’t want to stay open (maybe just because it has not been used much – I’m not sure).
