3rd gen neglected on TV???

Why is it when I watch TV I find the 3rd gen camaro or firebird is almost always neglected?! Hot Rod Tv , Horespower Tv..whatever it may be. I've seen alot of project build-ups with classic muscle cars and more 3rd gen Mustangs than 3rd gen camaro's. I've seen more features with 4rth gen Camaro's and Firebirds, yet I've heard from alot of people that they love the sharp liines of the 3rd gen f-body's. I know there are alot of 3rd gen f-body owners and fans out there. Please show us more on tv!!

Yeah teh 3rd gen doesn't seem to get alot of publicity that way. You can alwasy write to the producers of the shows and request a show, it can't hurt to ask.

They built up a 91 Firebird convertible with a 305 TBI. It was a decent build up.

I was just about to bring up the red vert HP TV did. It looked good until they put those ugly wheels on it. Try writing the shows, they have to belive there's a market before they do anything. Keep in mind that these shows are basically a vehicle to show off sponsors' products. That sort of dictates what is featured.

I agree. The 3rd gen seems to be treated like the runt of the bunch so to speak. I may be wrong but all I really see as far as resto parts or any for that matter are for 1st, 2nd and 4th gens. Not much at all for 3rd's compared to the rest. But I think thats what makes 3rd's so great.

I emailed them, perhaps if they got a flood of emails showing interest then maybe they might do another show on one. Though I specifically asked about them doing one on the TPI engine.

I'd like to see one of them do an engine swap on a 3RDGEN - or at least do something to update the injection system.

The TBI Firebird they did was ok, but come on - If you're going to show a 3RDGEN, do a TPI car for cryin' out loud. Argh.

Anyway - They are just out for ratings, just like any other show. Although, it pains me to see when they're doing their stupid h0nda swaps on a HORSEPOWER show... I remember seeing Joe one time going "Wow, we picked up 6 horses with this bolt on and now our total power is slightly above 170" or something like that....

Why? TBI is a V8 still and it's choked just like the rest of them from the factory (even worse in most cases).

It seems buildups on TV use TPI sometimes with the street rods but the stuff they do doesn't totally apply to a thirdgen....

I believe that these are the links you'll need if you want to contact them.

BTW, if you mail them be sure to include www.thirdgen.org at the end of the message. Lets let them get some idea's on what can REALLY do with a TPI powered car.

Whenever I see a 3rd gen on a TV show or in a movie, I know its a matter of time before it gets blown up or driven off a cliff

Those are always cars that have been written off anyway. They fix the exterior up just enough so it looks like its in good shape.

I'd like to say that K.I.T.T was the only thirdgen I know of to not get destroyed, but it got trashed like 2 or 3 times in the Knight Rider Timeline.

Goliath, the acid dip, and I think one more time, can't remember though. Wonder how many Thirdgen TA's got trashed in the filming of Knight Rider.

All in good time... There was a time when the 2nd gen was considered a tubby nag and not a classic... now it is. Just give it a little time...

there was an iroc in some steve segal movie about the mafia... it was when he was young and about 200lbs lighter. Isnt PHR or HR doing a HSR swap on a car? or is that GMHTP? ahh all these mags run the same chit... It would be sweet to see a head swap or cam swap while the engine is in the car... it would help me out!

I hope you all got Hot Rod magazine that featured my fav 3rd gen racer to date (due to the similarity to my own ride!), Nick Fusco's 1989 Firebird 350 with L98 small block done out to the max with SLP parts. Some wicked ride that cost a bundle and unfortunetly, I don't have cable and when I did, never had those channel options!

Talk about 'ugh'!

Anyway, There is also another new issue with third gen axle and wheel tips from SLP, however, this was on a ride they referred to as their $3000 beater, essentially. We here, beg to differ!

hehe

The baddie driving the Camaro was William Forsyth.

Off topic but have you seen the movie with Charlie Sheen and D.B. Sweeney playing high profile Porsche thieves? Title is not in my mind for that as well.... Should be as I also have it hehe

That has some great driving in it. The previous movie also had a Buick GN I think.
Very cool wheels

Funny, here in NJ there is a sterotype that suggests that IROC's are mainly driven by Italian-American youth, it was big back in the 80's when I bought my car. Anyway I had to laugh when I was watching an Soprano episode on DVD last night, there was a car accident out in front of one of the mob hang outs between a red IROC and some other car. All the mob guys went out yelling "at that Russo kid" who always drives too fast.

I know the Mods will love this thread going off the resto subject but I have to throw in the movie Armegeddon with Bruce Willis...You know, Michael Bay!
His movies prior to Pearl Harbor were pretty dang good so when the metior blew up a perfectly good Cadillac Eldo I felt exactly the same, but what can you do...still...it should be illegal to blow up prime GM cars!!

hehehe
I'll gladly take them as well

Of course! Mark Wahlburg! MarkyMark and the Funky Bunch! hehehe
That was a camp movie, but it was intended that way I felt. I have it on LD
(still the title eludes...this is sad )

This is sometimes the case, as in the new Bond, however, stunt cars often have more race car style build changes and they do perform what's needed. All done professionally under guidelines (in Hollywood).

There's also that new show that's new on Fox with Bill Bellamy and Tiffany Amber Thiessen? The name escapes me right now, but one episode the main guy was racing a girl down this windy road and she ended up flipping her IROC over on it's roof. Then he tried to rescue her as the car was spewing gasoline everywhere. Long story short, she pulled a gun on him and when she shot, the muzzle flash ignited the gasoline and boom, she's dead. Too bad too, that was a pretty IROC.

There was a blue 3rd Gen Camaro in Waynes World, when they're playing hockey and Waynes ex girlfriend is riding the bike and crashed into the car, I dont think Hollywood has any respect for 3rd Gens at all, but anyway I here they're making a Knight Rider movie to come out sometime in 2004

For sure there is a game in development and Starsky & Hutch is out for VG platforms.
I witnessed what looked like a black Grand National convertible but the only badge was the 6 on the trunk... looked like a t-type, circa 86 or 87. VERY hot car, but I certainly don't think it was ASC.

Cars like that on TV are not highlighted... damm
I also know the Fox show mentioned but I've only seen it maybe three times. There is a short history of cars making it big on shows, but Dukes of Hazzard, the A*team and Knight Rider are the big ones that even non car buff know. Don Johnsons' Cuda is a minor hit, and I almost forgot Miami Vice... LOVED that show!!

There is a black Camaro (not sure of the year) in the Martin Lawrence movie "National Guard".

Looks good and it doesn't get wrecked!

Well I was thinking more the ones they blow up and stuff.

But yeah the ones that are actually in motion are mechanically sound.

Steven Segal [hope that's correct!] first appeared in a movie that I know had an 80s Eldo in it, but not sure if there was an F-car too... I seem to think there was. The one mentioned a few posts back was Out For Justice! The flick about Porsche (pronounced with the 'e' as an "A", BTW) thieves with Charlie Sheen was No Man's Land.
Just came out on DVD. Also saw the A*team episodes from 1982 on DVD this weekend. Not sure what was in those as it takes place in Mexico.

Those movie titles were just bugging me so I decided to throw them up here for anyone interested.

What about the firebird they crushed at the begining of Gone in 60 Seconds. That was the saddest part of the movie.

Gone in 60 was the remake, but tribute to, the 70s classic.
If you watched the followup to that in the VERY early 1980s, it was called THE JUNKMAN and featured a 1979/80 Eldorado that hauled @ss. The car was again featured in the Nick Gage version, but a later model. That put a grin on my face as a owner of an '84.
I believe there are second gen F-cars in the JUNKMAN, but no 3rd gens that I can think of.

I actually heard that when the one guy jumped at Farva and slid across the hood, it left a huge scratch in the paint job that costed like $1000 just to fix.

Its not just on tv that you never see thirdgen camaros. I have searched all over for 3rd gen plastic models, or even diecast. I know they are out there but theye are expensive because there arent as many as say the 3rd gen mustang. I see those models all over hobby stores and internet.

I seem to recall Bob Seeger opening the movie with Paul Reiser and a Ferrari...still cool though (yeah, I know...different scene, but same movie

The one with Wahlberg (Marky Mark hehe) was The Big Hit... I have it on Laserdisc, that movie plays over the top so some miss the joke.

speaking of f-bodies

does anyone remember corvette summer with the "luke skywalker" guy? there was a wicked second gen ta chasing that corvette thrue the dessert, it was great up until the inevitable crash and burn.
then there was my favorite movie f-body, the yellow ta in the "wraith", thats still a hard chase seene to watch as the ta explodes and roles down the side of the cliff.
