rare bird or just a custumized one???
A few weeks ago I was in Moultrie Georgia atthe annual swap meep, largest in the south east area. At the swap meet there is also a car corral and an auction. I was walking around looking at all the muscle cars and looking around for parts for my car when I saw a whit 88-92 firebird trans am driving in my direction. The car was very clean and well taken care of. When it passed by me I noticed it had a decal on the side that said turbo. Is this a rare factory option or a garage concoction? All I can tell you is that the car was white, had T-Tops, tan leather interior. I lost it in the crowd and could not find it later that day so I have no idea about the drive train. I just want to know how rare the car is if it is original.

Sounds like a Turbo TA. They came with the Buick V6, very much like the one in the various flavors of Buick Turbo Regal. They were only made in 89, there were only about 1500 of them (I'm sure someone will give you the exact number). All of them were white.

Okay so it was a factory deal? Pretty neat. bigals, the pic you posted looks like it except there were no decals on the doors, It had a decal that said TURBO on the front fender right before the door. Other than that it was dead on, did they all come with door graphics or not.
Thanks Drew

Ok, I have heard several versions about how many TTA's were made, and they are as follows: Every version starts out with a base figure of 1550. Some have added that 2 convertible stick cars were made, making the total 1552. A sperate version mentions 5 pilot cars GM made before the run of 1550-all of which were NOT white, but no mention of the vert cars, making the total 1555. The final number I have heard is 1557, which takes into account the 5 pilot cars and the 2 verts.
Does anybody know FOR SURE what the story is? Oh, and I have seen a couple pics of the convertible 5 speed TTA, and last I heard belonged to a collector in Mexico.

1550 production
5 pilots.
Verts: 1 is real, originally made for PAS president, other began life as a T-top and was made a convertable by a dealer. Both autos and considered part of the 1550
1 test car is privately owned has a jacked up LC2 with a ZF-6 speed out of the ZR-1 Vette, and a dana 44 rear, roll bar, etc.
Went 190 mph +
1 of the pilots is maroon (fit test vehicle) another is black
(emissions test vehicle) both are 88 GTA's
Currently one lucky guy own's both of the pilots mentioned and the Vert. made for Jeff Beitzel, PAS Pres.
All I remember from a phone conversation with the "lucky guy"
Hope this sheds some light
