That might be a good one to restore...

Were the Red interior panels a Mecham thing, or was that someones bad idea?

It was not a Mecham thing. I think it was just a bad idea, lol.

I agree, looks like a great Resto. candidate.

As far as I know the Mecham cars were not a "Factory Authorized" conversion. As far as I am concerned they more desirable than a standard Firebird or T/A from the same year, just because they made more power, and they had some nice exterior enhancements like the afore mentioned spoiler and the Ground effects (not sure if the gfx were the same ones that were stock)

on a side note: I do have a set of rims like on that car

wernt those rims different than the facotry rims , even though they looked the same i think they were 16x8 or something when the factory ones were 15x7 or 16x7 , and thanks nick .

I guess I kind of take that back, mine do not have the machined edges on the spokes, but they otherwise look the same.

From looking at the pics they look like the stock 15" ones....

As a siede note the 16" rims did not appear until 1984, the 15th Anniversary T/A was the first to get them. The 15ths sued 16x8 Rims, and I believe the first F-body to have 16" rims. Starting in 1985 the 16" rims were optional on the IROC and T/A (WS6)

1982-83-84 Mecham cars were indeed factory authorized. You could order them through any Pontiac dealer. The 85 and 86 were not, hence their much lower production numbers.

These were awesome factory tuner specials akin to the 60s Birds that defied todays' type of speed safety concerns. These get the 'all-hail' as do the Firehawks. Amazing domestic roadwarriors!

I think top speed is around 160 for the stock TPI. The Firehawk's specialized 350 TPI was said to reach 180 top speed. 355 horsepower and 250 made, according to my video stats. I'm thinking also of the racing Mecham editions that are really 'flatout'
