Its an 89 but was built in like october of 88. the vin number is 1G2FS21E1KL208355 what ive always heard is that the last 6 numbers are the production sequence, with the first number being the platform identifier? call me dumb but im jus curious, does this mean my car is the 8,355 firebird to roll of the line?? Any another wonderful tidbits of info ud like to post would b cool as well!

Most model years are built the year before.. The 'next year' cars usually start appearing in dealer's showrooms in Sepember and October.. There are some actually built in the real model year, but this is usually to cover high demand for a particular model.

It's a bit tricky reading GM production numbers.. Digits 12-17 are the sequence numbers... But they don't start with 00001

The first car off the line is 100001
The 100th car off the line is 100100
The 9,999 car off the line is 109999
The 10,000 car off the line is 200000

The left most digit starts with 1 and increments by one every time 10,000 cars are built. 10,000 cars = 2xxxxxx ... 20,000 cars = 3xxxxxx ... 30,000 cars = 4xxxxxx ... etc.. Another way of looking at it is that they're counting 10,000 car blocks.

Your sequence number is 208355... So.... Looking at the left most digit, we see that it's a 2 so there were already 10,000 cars built. Add 8,355 and your car was the 18,355 car off the assembly line.

I think you are off a little. I think the 10,000 car would be 110000. I think the 208355 sequence number is the 108355 car.

But i have been wrong before.

Camaro production sequence numbers start with 100001.
Firebird production sequence numbers start with 200001.

208355 = 8,355th Firebird built in any given year.
