Shouldn't a 4th gen tank bolt right in? If so, you can get the bigger one that was offered in the later years.

That wont help him if he wants to sump it though...I dont think. Since the 4th gen tanks are plastic. Well...I think there were some metal ones...
Anyway, you can probably clean your stock tank on the inside and the outside to make it pretty nice. You can find stock replacements all over. I think partsamerica.com has a decent price...
$228 and its free shipping on anything over $50. Here is the pic of the one WITH a filler neck... Ships in 1 day according to the site.
They list one without neck too...but not sure why you'd want that.

THe one without the neck I would suspect that you have to have a rubber hose to attach to the filler tube.

If you've ever tried removing/installing one of these puppies you'll know just how much fun it is. Having a rubber hose connection to the filler tube would definetly help ease the jocking around of the tank to get it in/out.

No problem man! If you order, post up and tell us how it looks! Ive gotten afew things from that site. The best part about that site is...you can return it at a local parts store. They list the stores...but some are Advance, Checker, and like 3 more. Which is pretty cool. You dont ahve to send it back.
That tank is a pain to get out for sure. The thing is, if you **** it and twist it JUST right..it falls right out. haha. If you have gas in it it'll surprise ya sometimes. haha. I have the 4th gen tank in now...and I dont detach the rubber hose when I remove it..but the flexibility lets you get it out really easy.

I think Classic Industries still has the stock OEM replacements.

The only problem I forsee with the rubber tube is the filler neck is not attached to anything behind the fuel door. All of the cars I have seen with the rubber hose type have a 3 screw attachment at the filler neck door.

4th gens just have an insert that "centers" the filler opening. then there is a little bracket that comes off of the upper metal portion of the neck that screws into the rear quarter bracing.
I used the upper part on my 3rd gen. Just used the little rubber filler piece from the 4th gen, trimmed it a bit, and got it to work. The little bracket coming off of the upper part of the neck fell right into a perfect spot for a self taping screw. Its solid, and very easy to take apart.
You can get the access to all that if you take out a couple of screws on the rear inner wheel well plastic.
But..for your application, Ide spend the little extra and just get the one with the filler neck already attached. Might need to fight it alittle more to get it in/out...but you wont have to worry about leaks or trying to mount the upper filler neck.

I have seen a few gas tanks that leak right where the filler neck meets the tank, I think because of the challenge of removing & installing a tank. Especially if the tank has any kind of fuel in it I can see where it could get broken there. If you replace your tank make sure its empty as possible... You have no idea how challenging it is to push up a tank while it is sloshing from the fuel, meanwhile holding it up with one arm and trying to get a strap bolt started and getting the whole thing properly anligned. I have done it by myself, its not a fun job, even a few gallons of gas makes it incredibly difficult.

Heck yeah its a pain. Gotta get those knees in there though. Im 6'4 and with my car up on stands I can manage to get my knees or one of my knees up under the tank once its in place and kind of jamb it up there. haha. Its not comfortable by ANY means, but it beats having the tank fall on you after you THINK the strap bolt is started.. haha.
I dropped my stock tank with about 1/4 tank of gas. I didnt know how to drain it. Couldnt get a siphon going... Same deal with the 4th gen tank, except it was only about 1/16 - 1/8 full. So it wasnt as hard.

Getting the strap bolts started while re-installing the tank is probably the most challenging part of the whole operation, at least for me. After doing it for the third time I discovered two little tricks. #1 get a slightly longer bolt. #2 use a cordless drill with an attachement to use your socket. If you're using the drill, once it gets started in the threads it keeps going in. With a regular ratchet you might possibly back out that one portion of a thread you had started. If you think you've got it secure, and that bolt backs out, it falls on your head and it hurts.
If you have a small leak by the filler neck, I might suggest this stuff. RayCrete It works pretty well. At $6 you don't have much to lose.

i cut my filler neck once i got it out. once the filler neck is out of the wat it is a lot easier to put back in. what i did was butt the two pieces back together and put about a 4-5'' piece of rubber hose with four hose clamps and left it like that with no support and i haven't had any problems with it. i find that you can reach the neck through a plastic piece in the fender well.
