Thinking of buying a 90 IROC 69k miles, blue, 350/at, leather, g80, g92. $6000. Pretty nice condition. Some issues cracked windshield, cracked front spoiler, leaky pinion seal, leaky rear trans seal, missing rear bumper emblem. Well maintained, garaged, original owner. I think its an o.k. deal about $1000 more than I'd like. haven't had a 3rd gen in 10 years. What dya think?
Sounds like good stuff, All are desirable options, not to mention its a 90, that by itself makes it uncommon.

$6000 does not sound bad for a well maintained car, those little things are typical, if it looks and drives otherwise good then it sounds reasonable. $5000 sounds better, I would bet thats what he wants from it... ask high and you can come down, never go up. Then both parties feel like they got a deal.
If you were really close I would look at it with you, I am not interested in another car but I might see some things as a non interested bystander.

Well I didn't go to the bank at lunch today and get myself $6000 more in debt. I'm giving myself one more day to think about it. My intention was to sell my 97 30th SS before buying another Camaro. But this one came up for sale locally last week and I just had to go look(which usually gets me in trouble). I was in the A.F. in 90 and used to go to the dealership and drool over the Irocs' on the lot. Now I've got just such a Camaro available RIGHT NOW! I know I could get a 4th gen Z for that money but there are things I don't care for on the 4th gens. After looking at this Iroc I have come to the conclusion I like 3rd gens better. I did own a v6 92 awhile back but nothing like the torque of an L98. ramble, ramble, ramble.

Gotta do it. If you wanted one of these cars back when they were new but didn't have the means, and now you do then you owe it to yourself to do it. I would say that $6K is not too bad of a price. '90s are rare as it is, Blue is a very nice and as I believe a rare color. Minor details can be fixed. The main thing is that if this car is what you wanted then you really need to get it. Or one like it. Don't try to convince yourself that you're better off with a 4th Gen of the same price range. That would not be nearly as nice as this IROC is.
IMO, a ThirdGen is a way for me to relive the 80's, back when I could not get one of these cars but much like you did a lot of drooling at dealerships.
Let us know how it goes.

The price IMO seems quite high for a seventeen-year-old vehicle. I doubt the car would go for much more than 4K around here; however, I live in rural Kansas which would no doubt make a difference.

I've decided to go deeper in debt. I'm picking up the 90 IROC on Monday.
When I called the seller today and told him I was up for buying his car he said "it'll be hard to see her go after 16 1/2 years. But Happy it's going to a Camaro nut."
Now to sell the 97 SS. Or I could find a 2nd gen(roller) and I'd have all 4 gens at once. Naw, that would be even beyond my Camaro obsession.
Now to find the rear bumper Iroc-Z emblem.
I don't even feel guilty!

Will expedite on the photos asap. A friend of mine had his digital camera with us when I went and looked at the car, he's going to give me a disk with pics.
There is a classic photo of the "optional" hood hold open rod....a croquet pole!!
Sounds like a good price for a decent conditioned car. Go for it if it will make you happy.

I picked up my "new" blue 90 IROC this past week. Came with window sticker, build sheet, sales sheet that shows the trade in of a 89 IROC, new car dealer inspection.
The sticker price was $21k, over $5k in options. Car was built in Nov.89 and not sold til Sept.90. Expensive car for back then. He went to his local dealer in Payette,ID looking for a blue no t-top IROC. The only one available was at a dealer in Eugene,OR. He himself went to Eugene and drove it back to Payette for the new car dealer inspection.
After the title was signed and check handed over he asked "So do you want to see my Camaro?" I thought wtf? I talked to him all week and showed him pics of my other Camaros and he never mentioned he had one. Turns out in the garage was a maroon 90 IROC with 22k miles, still smelled new inside. He was afraid to show it to me before because he thought I wouldv'e wanted that one instead. Might have, but it would have cost much more.
I'll see if I can figure out this picture attatchment thing..
Nice! I realize it's not mint but that was a good deal for the mileage. Only thing I'm not for is the hatch louvers. Give it a good detailing, see if you can bring those headlight recesses back, detail the engine, polish or replace parking lights, and give it whatever else it needs and you'll have a real nice example there. What kind of tires are those?
I realized how much I did miss my 3rd gen that I sold 11 years ago once I took this one for a drive. Looking into stats for the 90 suprised me as well, only 2415 350 IROC's! Compared to over 12000 for 89. Love the color too.
Congratulations! It looks very nice! But one thing jumped out at me--the wheels/tires are on the wrong sides of the car.
And when you swap them from side-to-side, prolly should be sure they're on correctly, front-to-back as well.
I didn't think that silver "IROC-Z" rear bumper emblem would be so difficult to find, but I've searched hawk's, tpiparts, moderndaymuscle, yearone, classic, thirdgenusa, even the dreaded thirdgenresource(a.k.a., fbodymotorsports), and the only one anyone has is the red one. Other than getting lucky in a junkyard, your last hope might be Tom at www.houseofcamaro.com

That is a great looking car. Great color. I too think that you will enjoy having a '90 model year it's just so rare to see anything '90.
Great decision IMO to buy that car. The guy was smart not to show the 22K IROC in the garage until after the deal was done!

As in direction of rotation? I never picked up on that. Shouldn't there be an arrow or something on the sidewall? So if he got a rotate and balance the tire tech wouldn't do that. My EX had a 95 TA that we had directional tires on it, I thought there was an arrow or something.
It would seem there should be an arrow and prolly is one, though that doesn't necessarily mean there will always be one. But regardless, a tire tech should no better(though I've met a few who don't).
If you're looking at the car from the front, you should see the tread pattern pointing downward, looking like an actual V, so when rolling forward, it will be moving in a forward direction. Then when on wet pavement, the point of the tread pattern(the center) contacts the road first, and it channels the water outward from underneath the tire.
On yours, the V is pointing downward from the rearview. So when your car is rolling forward on wet pavement, the wide portion of the tread pattern will contact the road first and channel the water inward toward the center of the tire.
Pointing forward when rolling forward.
So as it is now, that means a side-to-side rotation for you.
Hey guys, those aren't directional tires!! The tread pattern does not have a V pattern in it! It is just slanted lines from outside of tread to the center, and facing the opposite way on the other side of the tire. Those are non-directional and symmetrical. If they were directional they would have to have an arrow on the sidewall.
Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I can tell from the pictures.
Post up what kind of tires those are and we'll see for sure.

They are ZEXIUS 245/50zr/16. I could find no arrow on the sidewall. Nor any nomenclature indicating direction of rotation. Funny thing though, the drivers side tires are orientated the "other" direction.
From looking at the pattern I would assume they belong the other way, with the V pointing down in the front of the tire so as it rolls on wet pavement it would push the water to the outside....
Not much on the web the about Zexius tires, but I finally did find some on ebay. And... it's not a unidirectional tire. The tread pattern on the inner half of the tire is identical to the outer half, but it runs in the opposite direction, asymmetrically. It's very hard to see in your pix, Brett, but you can barely see it on the rear close-up. Good catch RPM!
I apologize for creating such a distraction from your beautiful new car, Brett. But at least that's settled, lol. Great car! Enjoy it!
I know the tire store the previous owner had the tires installed at, I still have the warranty paperwork. Maybe they'll flip the passenger side tires on the wheels for free, since the drivers side is fine.
I've found that I have a heater core to change. Oh boy. I found a tech article here on how to do that. But I ordered a Helms' manual online and there are differences. The Helms manual states that I have to remove the center console and some of the dash as opposed to the tech article. Where the dash pad and pass. side under dash panel are it in the tech article. Anyone with experience on this job? A friend of mine said I've got a full days work.
Little story about the 50 mile drive back to my house with the IROC; A couple days before I picked up the car. I went to the deep, dark, back corner of a closet and hauled out an old dusty cardboard box. The cardboard was old and weathered the packing tape had become one with the box. I cut the tape and therin was my cassette tape collection I hadn't seen in years.
I sorted through 150 cassettes trying to pick out 4 for the drive. Many memories stirred about as I looked at the heavy metal era music of the late 80's early 90's. Memories of my youth and driving in my first Camaro(78) filled my head. "The good 'ol days."
It was hard to choose, not hearing most of the music in ten years or more I wanted to listen to them all. But eventually I settled on Helix, Hurricane, Dokken and Suicidal Tendencies. I also threw in a Doors best of as well. Of course I was unable to listen to every one end to end. But I managed to listen to a song or two from them all. Not bad sound, considering the original owner couldn't tell me if the cassette player worked or not because he had never used it.

I'm sure you will have more memories coming since you bought that IROC. I have yet to do the same as soon as I'm done moving to Atlanta in 3 months.. I will be looking for an IROC as well. Can't wait to get back in the drivers seat of an IROC again. My 2 kids and fiance can't all fit in the vette so it will be nice to cruise around in with the 4 seater.
Ahhh cassette tapes, now that's the 80's! Glad that you're able to relive memories with that car, that's what its all about!
What's going on with the heater core? Leaking?

Yes the heater core has a leak. The carpet isn't wet but it does smell like glycol. I reached under the dash and my hand came back with some glycol droplets on it. I missed that one during the pre-buy inspection. Guess I was too excited about buying a shiny new thing.
wow i got to this thread real late. 6k isnt too bad, 5500-5800 sounds a little better seeing as it will take at least 150 for the windshield, around 100 for a new front spoiler (i think thats how much mine was...) and who knows how much for those emblems. i know GM discontinued some of them. When you say pinion seal leak, you are talking about the rear end right? these cars dont have rack and pinion steering. that and the trans will cost money to fix
dont kick yourself though, i overpayed for my 91, $5450 with 80K miles. u cant dwell on the past
btw i like the rear louvers, dont remove them

Considering the overall condition, leather, mileage, 1990 model year, L98, color, etc... I'd say you did ok. It doesn't look like it's been subjected to the stupidity that many of these cars suffer through. Keep it stock and the value will only go up. Too many people would take a nice clean car like this one and add a silly cowl hood, chrome wheels, and a 91 Z28 spoiler...
Also, check the RPO's, the rear window louvers might be original equipment.
After all these years thinking that rear window louvers were a dealer only item I was suprised to see the louvers on the window sticker and have an rpo code in the console.
Gave the car a good cleaning today. Boy those rear louvers are cheesy! The top hinge point is unbonded from the hatch glass.
Leather seats are a nice option. But the original owner didn't condition the leather on the pass. seat at all. Some of the stitching is pulled in the center bottom section. Looks like they may have conditioned the drivers seat, it didn't seem as "dry".
The county they lived in is primarily farming country, so I found some more rock chips I hadn't noticed. Again I saw a big shiny blue IROC and didn't pay attention to the finer details.
I'm BACK! I went and crawled into a bottle and didn't come out until December 1, 2008. Alot has happened since. Got married, went on a honeymoon, sobered up. I'm just now catching up on 3 years of negleced cars, house, gal.
I drove the IROC today for the first time in 2 1/2 years. The neglected IROC sat in my shop for most of that time. Only occaisonally pulled out for a start up. I usually sat in it late at night drunk off my butt listening to old cassette tapes. Until the heater core let go. Two weeks ago I changed the heater core(what fun) and prepped the Camaro for the road. It passed emissions this a.m. and I put new tags on the plates.
Felt GRAND to cruise in the IROC again. When I fired it up for the first time after topping off the radiator(post heater core change), there was a tense 5-10 minutes hoping and praying there were no leaks. Once I determined it was leak free I sat behind the wheel outside next to the shop in my back yard and turned on the radio and cried just a bit as I looked over the instrument panel, out the windshield and beyond. What a relief to be sober and working on my Camaro again thank God!
