Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

On the way home yesterday I spotted a camaro that looked like it had gold GTA wheels on it. Today I decided to stop and take a look at it and this old man came out. He told me he was selling the whole car, not just the wheels. I'm fairly new to the third gens since I've spent most of my time with second gen T/A's so I don't know if they were real GTA rims or not (they're 15"). Back to topic: He went to get the key, opened the door and the interior is pretty much a 9 out of 10. Original blue interior with perfect seats. No rips, tears, or fading. The only thing not perfect was the missing headliner. The wierd berlinetta dash and radio pod is completely intact, no cracks. He told me it has a 350, it's a V-8 bone stock I'm guessing is a 305. I don't know what year it is I'm guessing 84-85. He said it doesn't run because it needs a starter. The body is in decent condition with a couple dime size cancer spots on the end of the hood over the driver side headlights. I'm debating on weather or not to buy it since he doesn't have a title for it (it's a hassle to get a new title in Texas). The car is 100% complete, even all the A/C and stock air cleaner. He only wants $250 for the car. I'm currently giving a 91 W68 bird a facelift. Is the Berlinetta worth my time to restore? Is there a demand for an original out there anywhere?

buy it and part it. for 250 you cant go wrong bet you could get that out of the cluster and console parts.

Yeah, I know I could make a good bit of cash parting it. It just seems like an injustice to me to part a car that nice. But, I desperately want to get my bird in for paint and this little investment could speed that up for me so I think I'm gonna get it.

Re: Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

The '84-'86 Berlinettas are nice cars for everyday driving. But for what you want to do Jproz makes a good point on buying her and parting her out.It would be nice if you could restore her but unless there are some odd options(J65 4 wheels disc, pwr antenna etc).I'm sure there are many '84-'86 Berli's that have dash electronic problems that could use parts to repair thier cars.As said $250 for a complete running V8 Berlinetta you can't go wrong.

I stopped by again today to get the VIN so I could have it run to make sure the car isn't stolen and/or how hard it would be to get a new title for it. It's an 85 with the LG4 and it does have a power antenna. It's also got T-tops. I don't know how rare it is for a Berlinetta to have T-tops.

Re: Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

Well..It's a good deal at $250!!!.. I have a 84 Berlinetta I paid $3000 for in 1993 but it had a title and ran great. I would not part it out. Just restore it . the berlinetta is the forgotten Camaro. Just about everywhere I go people say what is that ?I didn't know they made a Camaro like that. The Berlinetta is not a fully rare car but it is not seen anymore. 1984 was the first year of the Digital Dash and 1986 was the last year of berlinetta and Chevy only made them half of 1986.. And to find one with all the options, 305 V-8 (which the the majority had 2.8 V-6 ) and T-tops is a good find. My berlinetta is NOT loaded, only option I have is the 305 V-8 (which is a 350 now..) I have NO pwr windows, locks or seats or T-Tops... Berlinetta's are not easy to find cars . What killed the Berlinetta was pricing and people were scared of the Digital Dash. Berlinetta's were the same price as a Z28 of the same year. And the problems are not the dash but the radio failing. I'm on my 2nd radio now. And all the parts are discontinued so E-bay was my friend when I restored mine May 06. Good luck and Restore it don't Part it !!..

And the wheels on the berlinetta are turbine type gold and silver 14 inches factory. If they have the Trans Am Gold wheel on it that would be 16in wheel. And in terms of rare well they did not make that many but how many berlinettas have you seen running around. I have not seen one other than mine in the past 2 yrs on the street.
1984

127,292 Camaro base coupes

Re: Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

Good points have been made toward saving her rather than parting her out.I wish I were closer because $250 for a running decent 3rd gen is dirt cheap. And it's a loaded Berlinetta on top of that.Last digital dash version I saw,was a '85 I think, was at a salvage yard and she was still in one piece and locked.I wouldn't be surprised if you found she had rear disc brakes too.And as stated they were as expensive,or more so,than the Z28 and the electronics were something new people were unsure of(remember the talking computors Chrysler used in Daytonas,Lasers,Lenarons etc).

Re: Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

Me I'de buy a berlinetta they were cool looking cars in the day. Restored in this day even better. Performance wise anything that could make a Z-28 of the same day could be applied to them as well. In my eyes there true downfall was there cushy boulevard suspension. But if you like the looks of the camaro just not the ride of one a berlinetta was the car to have.
Me personally I'de take a berlinetta's dash over a standard camaro's dash anytime of the day just like I'de take a T/A digital dash over a standard one. Why the look cool. Well, provided they are working right.

I think the 85-86 berlinettas were better looking then the 84 berlinetta's ... I say buy the 85 and restore it someone will pay you very well for it in excellent condition. I don't think you lose much considering your initial investment. Heck restore it and use it, it would make for a cool everyday car. So what if you can outrun it on foot they are cool looking cars!

Re: Dirt cheap Berlinetta...would it be worth the hassle??

I think I'm gonna pass on the Berlinetta. If it had a title it would already be in my driveway. I've talked to too many people the past couple of days that said it would be really hard to get a title for it. If I bought it without the title my only option would be to part it out and it just wouldn't seem right to me.
