1982 Trans AM Debate...HELP!

Ok, I'm having a debate with someone on Ebay who is selling a 1982 TA and is making some pretty outrageous claims.

First, he claims it is a "Knight Rider Edition" Now we all know this is untrue, but he insists there was such a "package" His quote was:

"I hate to break the bad news to you, but YES there absolutely is a Knight Rider edition. To be the same EXACT car off the television series, it HAD to have the 305 5.0 engine, fin cast turbo wheels, the cowl hood, the WS6 suspension, and the T-tops. ONLY the '82 1/2 models had all these options (NO OTHERS EVER BUILT). If you go look on NADA blue book they even have in astericks at the top of the page *note* Knight Rider edition*!!! "

I asked him to produce an RPO code for this or where you could check this option on the invoice...he has yet to do so. He still thinks he is right though.

15" Turbocast wheels...He says they are ONLY available on 1982 Trans Am's.

"You are COMPLETELY wrong about the wheels as well. These were ONLY put on the'82 models and the simple fact you wasted my time telling me otherwise verifies to me you really are lost as to what you speak of. Too many collectors and websites that specifically sell parts for this car would all tell you differently"

Also untrue. I have seen many of them on '83 TA's and there is even a red one with 15" Turbocast wheels and black hubcaps in the 1983 Pontiac Firebird brochure. I pointed this out to him, yet he still insists you could only get them in 1982. He claims to have worked for pontiac for half of his life so he knows....

In his auction he put

"Cross-Fire 305 5.0 V-8 that runs very strong, 4 barrel Quadra Jet carburetor"

I went to ask him how can it be a Crossfire and yet have a 4 barrel carb? Which is it, fuel injection or carb?? He went on to say:

""Crossfire" has to do with the firing order of the cylinders, not the fuel injectors naturally because there aren't any"

I have no idea where he got that from, and I have told him crossfire injection was a fuel injection setup available on the 82-'83 TA/Z28, '81 Vette, and '84 Vette.

Then the hood. He claims to have the "Bulge" hood. His quote:

"There were MANY '82 models built WITHOUT the cowl hood and YES, they were ONLY put on the '82 1/2 models (which I could go into great detail to prove to you, but not wasting my time)"

From what I understand you can only get the "Bulge" hood in 1982 with a CFI Trans Am. Carbed Trans Am's got the flat hood. He seems to believe you can ONLY get the "Bulge" Hood in 1982!!

I said the "bulge" hood ONLY came with TA's with Crossfire Injection, due to the cowl induction. Mind you, this is 1982 ONLY. I know that in '83 you could get the fresh air induction through the cowl with a carb setup.

This person claims he has a carbed '82 TA with "bulge" hood that came that way factory. I disagree. He also claims the cowl had a block off. I also disagree.

"In 1982 pontiac planned to put the 4.9 Turbo engine in the car along with this cowl hood to go along with that turbo motor. They scrapped the idea at the last second and went with the 305 motor instead. Since they already had hundreds of cars built with these hoods, they left the hoods on them. They also had fake or "closed" cowl hoods that were just for show and non functional"

Anyone care to clarify this?? Who is right? I've been on here for a long time and I've learned alot about my '82 TA and I think I have some pretty good knowledge on what was availabe and I'm pretty sure my claims are correct. The only thing I'm not 100% sure on is the hood...

I think the guy is just trying to make a buck using "Knight Rider" for an excuse...much like a lot of people do on Ebay when it comes to these cars.

Lastly this is what he told me:

"You don't get over 1,075 hits and 35 watchers in a day and a half not to mention overseas collectors contacting you because your car is common. Apparently all these people feel otherwise and realize what this car is. 25 year old run of the mill cars don't blue book at $6,000, and NADA wouldn't label a car "knight rider edition" if there were no such thing, lol"

Here is the auction if anyone is interested:

It's called Wake & Bake...
U r correct, he is wrong...
A few other tid bits...
That buldge hood was originally designed similar to 81 Turbo hood, but in 82, turbo was dropped... hood ran through 84 (I had an 84 TA with it...
Then it reappeared in 87 - 92 Formulas...

"Knight Rider Edition"?
Maybe so, by a third party...
But after the first few episodes of Knight Rider in 82, GM specifically told Universal to stop referring to Kitt as a Pontiac or Trans Am because too many people were comming in asking for "Knight Rider"...

PS
Check out my knight rider edition / 91 Formula / Notchback!

I also told him about GM telling Universal to stop referring to KITT as a Trans Am, because of people asking how to get the car. Since he worked at pontiac half his life he should have known.

And the same inserts used from 82-92?
Nope either... 82 & 83, then 84 had closed flat panels...
Then all the other "inserts" were different through 85 up...
Oh, my 91 Banshee inspired nose had no inserts...

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

If you notice the eight digit of the VIN is a H which means she came with the LG4 originally. For '82 the LU5 CFI's VIN digit was a 7.That would be strike one since he's claiming she has Crossfire Injection. And the underhood shot clearly shows a carbed motor.

And if she was a "Knight Rider" package the shifter handle is incorrect. And since when did K.I.T.T. have whitewall tires? And the 301 Turbo was due to be used in the 3rd Gen T/A is the reason for the offset hood. But it was decided that the coporate 305 would be shared with the Z28.

EDIT:And why is she red underhood did you ask him about that? And the interior doesn't look all that great and the seats don't look like PMD's.

I don't understand people's fascination with the fugli-fied Kitt cars. I'd much rather have a stock TA any day.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

I wouldn't waste your time with this guy. Just another eBay idiot.

As far as the hood, I'm pretty sure some later production '82 LG4 car were available with the power bulge hood. I've seen quite a few with the flat air cleaner lid and a block off plate just like the '87-92 TBI Formulas. I can't imagine that many have been swapped out.

He is partially correct about the 301 Turbo originally being planned for the T/A and the reason for the off-set bulge hood being carried over from the 80-81 Turbo T/A. Very late in the development, Chebbie finally talked GM upper management in to killing off the Pontiac V8 and that was that. Pontiac engineer Tom Goad has spoken about some of the "heated discussions" with upper managment and Chebbie about the 3rd-gen T/A original plan to be Pontiac powered. The eBay clown is completely incorrect about production cars already being built.

From what I understand you can only get the "Bulge" hood in 1982 with a CFI Trans Am. Carbed Trans Am's got the flat hood. He seems to believe you can ONLY get the "Bulge" Hood in 1982
Actually the Buldge hood was standard fare on all trans Am's from 1982-1984, there was a shortage of the hoods for one reason or another in mid 1982 and some of the Trans Am's got the Flat hood. Only the CFI cars to my knowledge got the actual active scoop however in 1982. In 1983 and 1984 I believe it was an option but available on all LG4 trans ams and more than likely standard on the L69 that year.

My 1983 LG4 TA had the active scoop. I have a Hood from an 82 with a block off plate but the grid on the back of it to make it look active.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

I asked a few things and said to him he doesnt have the PMD Seats that KITT has...so he said :

Well wise one, you completely contradicted yourself. You specifically said "you dont have the PMD seats that came on Knight rider KITT", then immediately before that brainiac comment stated "there is no such edition. never ever"? Now explain how there can be PMD seats on this edition if this edition never existed? You make no sense and a reply almost was not granted. Eduacate yourself before speaking! It DOES have the PMD seats, they have leather seat covers over them. All '82 1/2 models were the Knight rider edition, and what stood them apart from early '82 versions were 5 things....Fin cast Turbo wheels, Cowl hood, WS6 suspension package, and T-tops. There are numerous websites dedicated to this year Knight Rider and NADA blue book themselves when you look up this car says...*note. Knight Rider edition*. As any car ever made, there were various color bodies. The color of the car has no bearing over the year, make, model, or edition. An '82 is an '82 PERIOD! I don't have over 1,070 hits, 35 watchers, and 3 overseas collectors trying to ship it, all within the first 3 days of listing it because "I'm mistaken, and asking too much". NADA Blue book on this 25 year old car wouldn't be almost $6,000 average cond. if it weren't rare or the real deal. I even have a Car Fax report to support my facts. Clearly you need to read up more on this car, and understand what it is before e mailing people jibberish. I could direct you to MANY websites that can eduacate you, but that's not my problem. If I'm "asking too much" in your eyes, it's only because you can't afford it! Don't bother replying as it won't even be read!

What a hunk of......
Nevermind.

Nice car. I wonder, does the previously red paint make it even more rare? Or is that another special option?

Man that ad is just oozing with garbage.

"The air conditioner works great but there is a pin hole leak in one of the air conditioning hoses so there isn't any freon in it currently"

Works great with no freon, eh?

"stall clutch in the transmission which allows you to shift through the gears manually if needed for faster acceleration"

Thats a new one, havent heard that one before.

I especially like the back seats, must be a time warp option.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

I saw that eBay auction too. Some people just believe what they want to believe.

Just to summarize what has already been said:

*There is no Knight Rider edition
*The flat hood was put on early carbed T/As then mid production run all T/As got the turbo hood unless specifically ordered without it. (I’ve never seen a later production run T/A without the turbo hood but I’ve heard they exist). also the LU5 always got the turbo hood.
*All 83 to 84 T/A’s with the turbo hood had working induction.
* the 15” Cast Aluminum wheels where available in 83 (not 84) but not advertised much. Pontiac really played them down, probably because of all the warranty issues.

MORE FUN
I WONT BE LOSING MORE TIME WITH THIS GUY ..BUT I JUST CANT BELIEVE WHAT HE REALLY BELIEVES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HERE IS HIS LAST ANSWER :

Stay overseas and keep looking brainiac. I told you to not email me again with your nonsense. Do it again I'll ask Ebay to ban you for harrassment. Like I said, eduacate yourself on this year vehicle before speaking. It DOES have the PMD seats naturally because this IS the KITT car DUH! Because I have seat cover protectors on them means there can't be PMD seats underneath them? Dumbest thing I ever heard. The Knight rider edition and the KITT car are the SAME thing smart guy. True, there is NO "actual" GM line called Knight Rider because the KITT car is a MOD car with all aftermarket accessories. However, this is the EXACT year, make, and model they built 6 cars after for the TV series. In the series there was a 'KITT' car, and a 'KARR' car. All of these cars were built and accessorised at a cost of 12.5 million dollars to use for the TV series. ALL of these cars were '82 1/2 Trans Am models. SAME EXACT CAR I HAVE HERE!! Except with a modified 4.9 Turbo engine THEY WERE IDENTICAL! EVERYTHING ELSE ON THIS CAR IS IDENTICAL AS TO THE KITT ON THE SHOW! Your comment "I'm looking for a REAL KITT car" is rediculous because clearly you have no concept what a KITT car even is if you think it's different from a Knight rider edition. My ad doesn't read crossfire injected NOR does it say injected ANYTHING (if you could read you would see this). It's carberated DUH not fuel injected! If your looking to buy a completed KITT version like on TV there is one on Ebay right now starting bid $50,000. Oh let me guess.....this doesn't have PMD seats either and it's a fake, lol. GET A LIFE BUDDY AND FIND A HOBBY! CARS AIN'T DOING IT FOR YOU! ONE MORE EMAIL FROM YOU I WILL BE REPORTING FOR IMPROPER USE OF EBAY MESSAGES TO SELLERS

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

The T46 "Flat Hood" was standard on the 82 Trans Am with the LG4 with the Turbo Hood being optional and non-functional on same, for the entire production year. The "hood shortage" is a myth.

The "Turbo Hood" was standard and functional on all Trans Ams 83-84.

There was no "Knight Rider Edition" termed by GM. That is from another group and that would have been a Black and Gold (not red) with the tan interior (not black) and the Viscount Seats.

As to the car description, it is hard to stop laughing no matter where you start reading it.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

I sent this guy a message thru Ebay and he still claims the Crossfire he's referring to is the firing order.I sent back all Gen 1 SBC have the same firing order.
I asked about the color being different underhood than exterior and he admitted it was red and that color doesn't matter.I pointed out in return color does matter in this "special edition" as all KITT T/As were black with a camel/doesking interior.
And then he says the hood was an '82 only.I pointed out it was a '82-'84 in funtional and non functional then reappeared on the Formula in '87 in non functional version.
And his statement on the grills being readily available but i asked him if it was a KITT noce a standard T/A grill won't work.
It sounds to me more like a car dealer trying to push a T/A hard.

Thats great, sometimes you just gotta let people gloat. Usually people get aggressive and pissed of when they know their wrong. I went to see a beautifully restored 87 monte carlo around the block, the owner said it was restored all to original except for some chrom. SO i said, are you sure? Did they have carbureted 87 305s with center bolt valve covers? The center bolts indicate a later year, so im not so sure that intake and those heads are from the same engine.

The guy called me a F***er, slammed his hood, and said i know nothin about these cars....

Oh well....

No bids? What a sham...Uh...I mean shame! Poor guy saw some others on Ebay...would make a nice $500 project. $2000 to rebuild it....

Actually the '87 SS Monte Carlo's had Carburated 305's with centerbolt valve covers. '87 was the first year for centerbolts.

He could be right about the "crossfire" firing order ... Remember the crossfire distributor caps anyone? Maybe thats what he is referring to.

crossfire cap never changed the firing order but it moved the plug wires on the distributor cap maybe thats what he is talking about.

I don't have over 1,070 hits, 35 watchers, and 3 overseas collectors trying to ship it, all within the first 3 days of listing it because "I'm mistaken, and asking too much".Auction ended NO BIDS LOL ..... guess his car isn't really in demand.

It just looks like a Black Trans Am to me. Where's the Red LED up front?

By "worked for Pontiac for half of his life" he must have meant that he was a janitor at Stevenson Pontiac in Nowhere, USA for 8 years. He's obviously been well "eduacated".

I wonder if this is part of the KITT package, too . . .:

The only fish jumped the hook:

One bid for $2600 Cancelled.
Explanation: New unconfirmed EBayer, with zero feedbacks.

"The seller ended this listing early because of "an error" in the listing." Make it a whole list of errors.

Those NAWWWSS floormats are to keep from blowing the welds on the floorboard after the button is pressed.

Everyone knows that KITT had a regular nose cone. The poorly done black paint over red was the typical GM assemly proceedure for the KITT Specials, and the NOS floormats were sent by GM to all Crossfire-carbed LG4's owners 'cuz KITT had nitrous...LOL

Jproz I noticed the the blue console and door sill but it didn't register till you mentioned it.KITT's interior was doeskin/camel.And this poor T/A doesn't even have power windows.I still think this was a car dealer's poor attempt at pushing a hacked T/A.

"All of these cars were built and accessorised at a cost of 12.5 million dollars to use for the TV series. ALL of these cars were '82 1/2 Trans Am models. SAME EXACT CAR I HAVE HERE!!"

So basically, KITT was an 82 1/2 T/A and this car is an 82 1/2 T/A. Therefore, this is KITT!!

By the way, I'm Jet Li. Don't believe me? I can prove it. I am a male human. Jet Li is a male human. Therefore, I am Jet Li!!

Not to hijack...
But just to show that many people don't know what they're talking about...

check this out...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ponti...QQcmdZViewItem

Where do I start...

Nice car, but...

"She has a 4.7L 350 LT1 V8, with a 5-speed shifter. "

4.7L does not equal 350, 5.7 does...
LT1 ? I pointed out to the guy, the badge on his engine says Tuned Port Injection...
5 Speed - Yes, I see shifter, but GM made no 350 / 5.7 5 speeds... All were 5.0 305's...

But still a nice low mileage car...

Well, this goofball is another typical no-nothing ebayer trying to get more cash from a vanilla car by hyping it up, good luck bud.

My 1982 Trans-am has a power-bulge hood with an LG4 engine (well, had the LG4 engine). But yes, non functional, unless the PO removed the valve for that....

There's another thread about the maui blue Formula on Ebay.As I've said before it'a amazing the mistakes in Ebay ads.If you're interested in something on Ebay ask a lot of questions first.Besides the 5 speed and eighth VIN digit F discount being an original B2L/L98 Formula but she is nice looking.

THe Maui-Blue car would have the 3.42 gear being a Formula, with that said it would be a pretty rare car for 1991 considering thte T-tops and other options on it... I was surprised it didn't go for more.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

I didnt read this entire post responses, but did view the car. Did anyone notice under the hood is RED!?!? If it were in fact a 'KnightRider' factory edition, the car would be Black....entirely black! Simple fact is the car was a RED car originally that has been painted Black. If the auction was still up, I would help call him out on this mis-leading ad. Its also Carbed and not cross-fire injected. As esily seen. The guy is a douche and is never going to sell the car to any respectable buyer....much less a collector.

Re: 1982 Trans AM Hood Clarification...HELP

You are right, there was no "Knight Rider" edition ever marketed by Pontiac,so there obviously isnt an RPO code for it.That guy is a moron.
early 82's t/a's with carb setup did not get the cowl "bulge" hood, however some late 82's with carb did..I know this for a fact,I owned one.I currently have an 82 cross fire injected car black with gold same as KITT in the knight rider pilot episode.
All 82's with Cross-fire injection had a functional air intake in the scoop.they used throttle body injection..not a 4bbl carb as that "expert" claims.it is called cross-fire,because the intake is a cross ram style where left throttle body feeds the right side and right side feeds the left.
15" turbocast rims WERE still available on early 83 model year cars, however the PMD seats were not.they also no longer used the cone shaped shifter and th200c tranny.
Pontiac NEVER marketed a "knight rider" edition trans am.
Its amazing what kind of crap people come up with to hype their cars on ebay, the fact the damn thing didnt sell should give the con man who listed it an $80.00 education in trying to sling b.s. on ebay. nobodys buying it!
But what the hell, your conversations with him have given us all a laugh!
Maybe I should list my ***rare*** back to the future edition Delorean! they made one, didnt you know? (even though delorean was out of bussiness when the movies were made) but I wont waste my time with you guys trying to prove it! LOL!!!

Actually the 3-speed auto (th200c) was available until 84. It was a delete option for the base Firebird (not sure about Camaro) with the four cylinder or low output V6. And it even used the “Knight Rider” shifter. It wasn’t very popular so you hardly ever see them. The 4-speed auto had the T handle shifter, which was by far the more popular auto tranny

Wildjeff...Also the '83 had a one year only "T-Handle" shifter that was a lot narrower correct?? In '84 it was again changed and stayed to the end of the Firebird run.

My 83 has that funny little tube with a button shifter handle... I did not know it was a 1 year only thing.... It reminds me of a PVC tube "T" with a button on one side... IIRC its only about 1" DIA.

The 83 was a one year style for the TH700r shifter in the Firebird, I think the 84 and later shifter is more conferrable. The one I had in my 84 S/E was leather and the button was slightly rotated forward so it fit very well in my hand.

The T46 "Flat Hood" was standard on ALL of the 82 LG4 Trans Ams for the entire production year.
The Turbo Hood was optional on the 82 LG4 Trans Ams, unless ordered with WS6 or WS7 where it was included in that package.

It didn't matter whether it was an early 82 LG4 TA or late 82 LG4 TA. If the Turbo Hood wasn't order on it, or it didn't have WS6/WS7, it got the standard T46 Flat Hood all year long. I will say it again, anything about a "hood shortage", is a myth.

The MV9 200C along with shifter was still the Standard on the LG4 Export to Canada for 83.

The 200C was also the ONLY Automatic Trans option available on the 83 LQ9 2.5 & LC1 2.8 Firebird until February 1, 1983 when the 700R4 was released as optional equipment on the 2 engines. It was gone for 84.
