Vents in Air Dam: Why?

Ripping these pics off of another subforum but I have to know: What was the purpose of the vents in the air dam? Surely it cannot be to cool the rotors of the driver's side of the car! Is it cosmetic only?

Also, the original thread that these pics came from asked about why there were differences in the air dams pictured. Any ideas on that one? The original theory was that the top one was off a '91 Firebird and the bottom off a '92. My '91 air dam doesn't look like that though.

Re: Vents in Air Dam: Why?

I've always wondered this was too. Is there an auxiliary cooler of some sort behind that vent on the 91-92 cars?

I've wondered that also. Hopefully someone knows the answer and will share it with us.

My money is on cosmetic. With the asymmetrical, formy hood the Firebird has all kinds of off center "flair". Maybe this is another example.

Re: Vents in Air Dam: Why?

I too have always been puzzled by these, I like the look of the vented one much better for some reason ive seen more of the vented ones on convertibles, but I have no proof of that
